Bilateral keratocystic odontogenic tumor of mandible – A unique pediatric lesion: Case report and review
Abstract: The keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) is the most common cystic neoplasm in the maxillofacial region. Multiple odontogenic keratocyst are usually associated with Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma (NBCC) syndrome. A variant of this neoplasm is the sporadic multiple KCOT in pediatric population. Presented here is a case of bilateral keratocystic odontogenic tumor in a fourteen year old. Multiple keratocysts in the pediatric population is rare, aggressive, and recurrent and the first sign of NBCC or the solo presentation of human homologue of the PTCH (Drosophila segment polarity gene Patched) gene mutation.

Pediatric Melanoma, Moles, and Sun Safety
Although pediatric melanoma is a rare disease, diagnosis and management of pigmented lesions in the pediatric population, particularly dysplastic nevi and Spitz nevi, can be challenging. In this article, we provide an overview of pigmented lesions in children, including melanoma and management of melanoma risk factors and melanocytic nevi in the pediatric population. Congenital melanocytic nevi, Spitz nevi, dysplastic and acquired nevi, and changes over time are reviewed. We discuss considerations for excision and management of pigmented lesions in children.

Non-pigmented melanoma with nodal metastases masquerading as pyogenic granuloma in a 1-year old
We present the case of an 11-month-old girl who presented with a non-pigmented lesion that progressed to an ulcerated lesion. Pathology was found to be Spitzoid melanoma of 7.6-mm thickness. Micrometastases were found on examination of the sentinel lymph node. The family chose expectant observation following the excision procedure. A pediatric melanoma registry may be helpful in developing future analyses of incidence in survival in this specialized population.

Development and validation of a family history screening questionnaire in Australian primary care.
CONCLUSIONS This simple family history screening questionnaire shows good performance for identifying primary care patients at increased disease risk because of their family history. It could be used in primary care as part of a systematic approach to tailored disease prevention. PMID: 24821895 [PubMed - in process]

Guibitang, a traditional herbal medicine, induces apoptotic death in A431 cells by regulating the activities of mitogen-activated protein kinases
Conclusions: We first elucidate that GBT stimulates the apoptotic signaling pathway and suppresses the proliferation of A431 cells via regulating MAPKs signaling pathway. Furthermore, GBT significantly inhibits tumor growth of A431 cells without causing systemic toxicity. Based on our study, GBT could be useful in the management of skin cancer as chemoprevention and chemotherapy remedy.

117in * should personalised medicine be funded in countries with limited resources?
Personalised medicine implies that treatment is based on molecular analysis of an individual tumour specimen. A biomarker may define groups of patients who can benefit from a specific treatment, such as the Estrogen Receptor and HER2 in breast cancer, B-RAF mutation in melanoma and EGFR and ALK mutation in lung cancer. Large clinical trials support treatments based on these tests but whether they should be used in countries of limited resources depends on their cost-effectiveness compared to other potential use of limited resources for health-care. ER and tamoxifen and HER2 and trastuzumab as adjuvant therapy for breast ca...

PhRMA Disowns Companies Like Valeant and Turing
CEO of Turing has more on his plate today than ever before, as Martin Shkreli was arrested for securities violations. Recently, PhRMA CEO and President, Stephen J. Ubi, wrote an editorial for The Hill's Congress Blog, where he once again reiterated that companies like Turing and Valeant do not represent the pharmaceutical industry as a whole. Ubi opened his op-ed by stating that PhRMA actually welcomes the conversation that is starting to develop over drug pricing, because he believes "that the longer and deeper the discussion goes, the better lawmakers and the general public will understand the true, profound value these...

Point of care assessment of melanoma tumor signaling and metastatic burden from μNMR analysis of tumor fine needle aspirates and peripheral blood
This study evaluates μNMR technology for molecular profiling of tumor fine needle aspirates and peripheral blood of melanoma patients. In vitro assessment of melanocyte (MART-1, HMB45) and MAP kinase signaling (pERK, pS6K) molecule expression was performed in human cell lines, while clinical validation was performed in an IRB-approved study of melanoma patients undergoing biopsy and blood sampling. Tumor FNA and blood specimens were compared with BRAF genetic analysis and cross-sectional imaging. μNMR in vitro analysis showed increased expression of melanocyte markers in melanoma cells as well as increased expression of ...

Op-Ed in The Hill on Allowing Medicare to Directly Negotiate Drug Prices
Conclusion There is no denying that Medicare and other government-funded programs are facing a serious funding crisis and that changes to the programs are long overdue. However, it is important to review history and not make the same mistakes that have already been made in attempting to resolve the issue. Instead, Dr. Fonseca believes that “Medicare beneficiaries should have more freedom to choose the coverage and services that best meet their individual needs and preferences.”       Related StoriesCMS Releases Report on Drug RebatesMedPAC Considers Revised Approaches to Part B Drug P...
