Patient-derived xenograft models for personalized medicine in colorectal cancer
AbstractEstablishing superior preclinical models is critical for translational cancer research owing to the high failure rates of novel therapeutics in clinical studies. Even though cell line-derived xenograft models are easy to create, they have numerous limitations since these models do not represent the distinctive features of each cancer patient adequately. To circumvent the discrepancies between xenograft models and tumors, patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models have been developed. These models are established through the engraftment of tissue from a patient ’s tumor into an immune-deficient mouse, which preserves ...

Use of Circulating Cell-Free DNA to Guide Precision Medicine in Patients with Colorectal Cancer.
Abstract Patient-specific biomarkers form the foundation of precision medicine strategies. To realize the promise of precision medicine in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), access to cost-effective, convenient, and safe assays is critical. Improvements in diagnostic technology have enabled ultrasensitive and specific assays to identify cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from a routine blood draw. Clinicians are already employing these minimally invasive assays to identify drivers of therapeutic resistance and measure genomic heterogeneity, particularly when tumor tissue is difficult to access or serial sampling is necessa...

Perceptions of prognosis and end-of-life care outcomes in patients with advanced lung and gastrointestinal cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Patients' perceptions of their prognosis are associated with important end-of-life care outcomes. Interventions are needed to enhance patients' perceptions of their prognosis and optimize their end-of-life care.PMID:36802979 | DOI:10.1177/02692163231155511

Primary Care Physician Supply, Insurance Type, and Late-Stage Cancer Diagnosis
Conclusions As primary care physician density increases, those with private insurance consistently benefit the most in terms of late-stage cancer diagnosis, whereas those with several other insurance types experience flatter decreases or significantly higher odds of late-stage cancer diagnosis.

Reported Use of Electronic Health Records to Implement Evidence Based Approaches to Colorectal Cancer Screening in Community Health Centers.
CONCLUSIONS: Poor EHR data quality and cumbersome EHR systems may be significant barriers to implementation of evidence-based approaches to colorectal cancer screening in CHCs. PMID: 26548676 [PubMed - in process]

Simultaneous effect of disabling conditions on primary health care use through a capability approach
Publication date: April 2016 Source:Social Science & Medicine, Volume 154 Author(s): Clémence Bussière, Jonathan Sicsic, Nathalie Pelletier-Fleury There is evidence of social disparities in the use of primary health services in most European countries, and these disparities particularly affect people with disabilities. Many determinants of disabilities interact to limit access to health care (e.g. impairments, functional limitations, educational level). However, these determinants have typically been examined separately. We adopted a capabilities perspective to define multidimensional disability. Capabilitie...

Awareness, Understanding, and Adoption of Precision Medicine to Deliver Personalized Treatment for Patients With Cancer: A Multinational Survey Comparison of Physicians and Patients
Conclusion. These data demonstrate wide global use of biomarker testing but with regional variations reflecting cultural and local practice. Self-reported and physician-assessed cancer literacy, although generally high, highlighted important regional variations and the need to provide patients with additional information. Implications for Practice: Two surveys were conducted to evaluate the global use of biomarkers in clinical practice and the largely unreported patient experience of precision medicine. These findings are especially relevant because they address both self-reported and physician-assessed levels of patients...

Access to Employee Wellness Programs and Use of Preventive Care Services Among U.S. Adults
Conclusions Using a nationally representative sample of individuals, this study found a positive association between access to employee wellness programs and the use of preventive care services. The results support favorable policies to encourage implementing wellness programs in all worksites, especially those with <50 employees.

Is spirituality related to survival in advanced cancer inpatients in Korea?
Abstract OBJECTIVE: Spirituality is what gives people meaning and purpose in life, and it has been recognized as a critical factor in patients' well-being, particularly at the ends of their lives. Studies have demonstrated relationships between spirituality and patient-reported outcomes such as quality of life and mental health. Although a number of studies have suggested that spiritual belief can be associated with mortality, the results are inconsistent. We aimed to determine whether spirituality was related to survival in advanced cancer inpatients in Korea. METHOD: For this multicenter study, we recruited...
