Epidemiology of green space and health: a walk in the park?
The age-adjusted incidence of many non-communicable diseases (NCDs: allergies, asthma, autoimmune disease, some cancers, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and so on) is rising.1 They are leading causes of hospitalisation and death and many have reached epidemic proportions, with marginalised populations most affected. Causes remain unclear and prevention options are thus often scant or not optimally effective. However, as increases have occurred in recent decades, environmental and lifestyle factors are probably central. Some risk factors are well studied (tobacco, air pollution, diet, phys...

COVID-19 and lung pathologies
Horm Mol Biol Clin Investig. 2021 Jul 30. doi: 10.1515/hmbci-2020-0096. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCOVID-19 is a global emergency with over 10 million cases and over 500, 000 deaths worldwide. The SARS CoV-2 is a RNA virus belonging to the family coronaviridae. It has high infectivity. The manifestations of the disease range from asymptomatic or mild symptoms to severe pneumonia and ARDS. The CT scan of lung shows consolidation and "Ground Glass Opacities". The persons with other comorbidities are considered to be at a higher rate of acquiring the infection. Asthma and other allergies have not been identified as major r...

The Study of Dried Ginger and Linggan Wuwei Jiangxin Decoction Treatment of Cold Asthma Rats Using GC –MS Based Metabolomics
Conclusion In this study, serum and urine metabolites identified by GC–MS and general pharmacodynamic evaluation (morphological observation, histopathology, inflammatory factors, and visceral indices) were used to compare the effects of GJ and LGWWJX decoctions on cold asthma. Significant metabolic abnormalities were observed for 37 metabolites (15 in serum, 22 in urine) in rats with cold asthma. These altered metabolites might be potential biomarkers or therapeutic targets during development of cold asthma. Furthermore, pathway analysis demonstrated that pathways associated with energy metabolism and oxidative str...

Biological Properties and the Role of IL-25 in Disease Pathogenesis.
Authors: Liu Y, Shao Z, Shangguan G, Bie Q, Zhang B Abstract The interleukin- (IL-) 17 superfamily, a T cell-derived cytokine, consists of 6 ligands (IL-17A-IL-17F) and 5 receptors (IL-17RA-IL-17RE). IL-17A, a prototype member of this family, is involved in the pathogenesis of allergies, autoimmune diseases, allograft transplantations, and malignancies. By contrast, IL-17B is reported to be closely related to certain diseases, particularly tumors such as breast cancer, gastric cancer, and pancreatic cancer. Recently, the biological function of IL-17E (also called IL-25) in disease, particularly airway diseases, has...

An Unusual Cause Behind Diffuse Itching and Redness
BY MARISEL VAZQUEZ; ARIEN KASRA; & AHMED RAZIUDDIN, MDA 70-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer and a lumpectomy and lymph node dissection 20 years before presented to the ED because of redness and itching for two weeks covering the entire surface of her skin. Two weeks before that, she went for a Pap smear and was prescribed fluconazole for Candida vulvovaginitis infection. IL-17B: A new area of study in the IL-17 family
Publication date: October 2017 Source:Molecular Immunology, Volume 90 Author(s): Qingli Bie, Chengqiang Jin, Bin Zhang, Haixin Dong The interleukin (IL)-17 superfamily, a relatively new family of cytokines, consists of six ligands (from IL-17A to IL-17F), which bind to five receptor subtypes (from IL-17RA to IL-17RE) and induce downstream signaling. IL-17A, a prototype member of this family, has been reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of allergies, autoimmune diseases, allograft transplantations, and malignancies. Unlike IL-17A, which is mainly produced by T helper 17 cells, IL-17B is widely expressed in various ...

Mother ’s Milk and the Environment: Might Chemical Exposures Impair Lactation?
New mothers who quit breastfeeding earlier than they had wanted often chalk it up to not being able to produce enough milk. But a handful of researchers are exploring whether certain environmental exposures may affect some women’s ability to lactate.© Tony Anderson/Getty Images Lactation support includes teaching women techniques to breastfeed and build their milk supply, as well as reassuring them of their ability to nourish their infants.© Phanie/Alamy Stock Photo Education and counseling have been important tools in boosting breastfeeding rates, after decades of marketing mess...

Voodoo Medicine: Time To Stop
The world's most celebrated athlete standing on the podium in Rio in honor of receiving yet another gold medal has something important in common with your lazy uncle throwing back a cold one in his Barcalounger. Yes, swimming powerhouse Michael Phelps, purple-spotted from cupping therapy, and your slovenly relative with a beer gut both share a bond -- a weakness in succumbing to the allure of voodoo medicine. Modern-day snake oil salesmen hawking quick cures and TV doctors peddling the latest diet miracle with blatantly ridiculous claims are everywhere on the tube, social media, the supermarket and old-fashioned billboards...

Epigenetic silencing of BTB and CNC homology 2 and concerted promoter CpG methylation in gastric cancer
In this study, restriction landmark genomic scanning revealed methylation at a NotI site in a CpG island covering the BACH2 promoter in gastric cancer cell lines and primary gastric tumors. Increased methylation of the BACH2 promoter was observed in 52% (43/83) of primary gastric tumors, and BACH2 hypermethylation was significantly associated with decreased gene expression. Treatment with 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine and/or trichostatin. A restored BACH2 expression in BACH2-silenced gastric cancer cell lines, and knockdown of BACH2 using short hairpin RNA (i.e. RNA interference) increased cell proliferation in gastric cancer c...

Anti-inflammatuar and anti-oxidative effects of Nigella sativa L.: (18)FDG-PET imaging of inflammation.
Abstract Inflammation has an important role in many diseases such as cystic fibrosis, allergies and cancer. The free radicals produced during inflammation, can induce gene mutations and posttranslational modifications of cancer related proteins. Nigella sativa L. (N. sativa) is herbaceous plant and commonly used as a natural food. It has many pharmacological effects including antibacterial, antifungal, antitumor, analgesic, antipyretic activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatuar and anti-oxidant activity of N. sativa in acute inflammation. Thus we used the experimental lipopolysacchari...
