Allergies and risk of colorectal cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.
Authors: Ye J, Talaiti A, Ma Y, Zhang Q, Ma L, Zheng H Abstract A history of allergy or allergic condition has been reported to be associated with reduced risk of some types of malignancies. However, the understanding of this association for colorectal cancer (CRC) is controversial. We conducted a meta-analysis of CRC risk in individuals who had history of allergy compared to those without the history of allergic condition. Pumbed and Embase databases were searched for relevant studies. The adjusted relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were pooled using the random-effects model. Nine studies, includi...

The Relationship Between Family History of Cancer and Prevalence of Asthma and Allergies in Pediatric Patients in an inner-city minority population.
We have previously found a protective factor against cancer in the presence of allergies and asthma in adult patients. We hypothesized that the diagnosis of allergies or asthma in children is associated with decreased prevalence of family history of cancer.

Effects of antioxidant supplements and nutrients on patients with asthma and allergies.
Abstract Asthma and allergic diseases have become a worldwide public health concern because of their increased prevalence. Despite decades of research on risk factors, the causes of these disorders are poorly understood. They are thought to develop through complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. Because pulmonary and systemic oxidative stress increase inflammatory responses relevant to asthma and allergy, dietary or vitamin supplementation with antioxidants (a broad and varied category) has been proposed as an approach to reducing asthma incidence or morbidity. Meta-analyses of observationa...

Emerging allergies to cannabis
We report 6 clinical cases of immediate hypersensitivity related to CS.Subjects were young adults (27-41 years; 2M/4F) current or former C smokers. Symptoms were:plant food allergies due to cross-reactive lipid transfer proteins (LTP) (n= 5) (Metz-Favre C et al. Eur Ann Allergy Clin Immunol. 2011 Dec;43(6):193-5), rhinitis/asthma (n= 3), contact urticaria/eczema (n=3) and effort anaphylaxis (n=1). All had positive CS sIgE (median 8.05 (4.35-21.9) kU/L) (Ebo D et al. Int Arch Allergy Immunol. 2013;161:220-8). In 1 case, SPT with crude CS was made and strongly positive. All subjects were atopic.Up to now, C consumption has b...

Allergies and Risk of NHL in the Agricultural Health Study
Conclusions: Both the reduced risk of NHL among those with allergy symptoms and specific farm exposures in adulthood, and the increased risk among those who grew up on a farm suggest that the host immune response to agricultural allergens may influence NHL development. Impact: This prospective study is, to our knowledge, the first to investigate the relationship between allergy symptoms and NHL risk in farmers; confirmation of these findings in other farming populations is warranted. Looking beyond allergies: Does IgE keep a wary eye out for cancer?
We report and comment on medical innovations and advances – from bench to bedside – touching on scientific, business and policy issues. Our ranks include science writers, physicians, lab researchers, market analysts and others inside and outside the hospital. By Tom Ulrich Allergies of all kinds – to food, pollen, pets, etc. – can be blamed on a kind of antibody called IgE. Cousins of the more common IgG, IgE antibodies work with immune cells called mast cells to trigger the symptoms we associate with an allergic reaction (itchy skin, runny nose, closing throat, etc.). Boston Children...

Control Inflammation and “Turn Off” Disease-Causing Genes
The single most important thing you can do to prevent premature aging is to control inflammation. Inflammation is the body’s effort to heal itself. But too much produces disease. In fact, most of the diseases associated with aging are essentially inflammatory diseases. That includes cancer, heart disease, arthritis, arteriosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes. And the truth is that we’re all inflamed thanks to a modern diet that includes inflammation-friendly ingredients like sugar, cheap vegetable oils, and refined carbohydrates. Most doctors are not educated in the role of nutrition in disease. A...
