Effect of Non-vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants in Atrial Fibrillation Patients with Newly Diagnosed Cancer.
CONCLUSIONS: In AF patients with newly diagnosed cancer, NOACs showed lower incidences of ischemic stroke/SE, major bleeding, and all-cause death than warfarin, especially within 1 year after cancer diagnosis. PMID: 29671285 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Sex Differences in Atrial Fibrillation —Update on Risk Assessment, Treatment, and Long-Term Risk
AbstractPurpose of reviewAtrial fibrillation (AF) is a growing health problem worldwide. While the disease plagues both men and women, this arrhythmia does not affect both sexes equally. Women are more likely to have major adverse outcomes such as stroke and its sequela; however, recent data on stroke prevention show improving outcomes. The purpose of this review of the recent literature is to summarize important updates on risk scores and management of patients with AF.Recent findingsIt has been well known that women have a higher risk of strokes than men when untreated or when treated with warfarin. Current risk scores e...

Current Anticoagulant Usage Patterns and Determinants in Korean Patients with Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation.
CONCLUSION: Renal disease and history of valvular heart disease were associated with warfarin use, while cancer and smoking status were associated with direct OAC use in high stroke risk patients. The combination of antiplatelet agents with OAC was prescribed in 73.6% of patients without definite indications recommended by guidelines. PMID: 31997620 [PubMed - in process]

Direct oral anticoagulants versus vitamin K antagonists in patients with atrial fibrillation and cancer a meta-analysis
ConclusionsIn comparison to VKA, DOACs were associated with a significant reduction of the rates of thromboembolic events and major bleeding complications in patients with AF and cancer. Further studies are needed to confirm our results.

Effect of Cancer on Clinical Outcomes in Elderly Patients With Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation - Substudy of the ANAFIE Registry
CONCLUSIONS: Active cancer had no effect on stroke/SEE incidence in elderly NVAF patients, but those with cancer had higher incidences of major bleeding events and all-cause death than those without cancer.PMID:34853279 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-21-0631

Prognostic impact of a history of cancer and atrial fibrillation in antithrombotic therapy for chronic heart failure
ConclusionsThe CHF patients with history of cancer and AF had higher risk for stroke, systemic thrombosis, and major bleeding, especially in the elderly and those with IHD, but considerable number of the patients did not receive anticoagulant therapy, indicating the need for better optimal anticoagulation strategy.

Risk of Adverse Cardiovascular Outcomes in Differentiated Thyroid Cancer Survivors: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: There is limited evidence suggesting that DTC survivors may be at increased risk of CV death and atrial fibrillation (after adjustment for confounders). We did not observe a significantly increased risk of ischemic heart disease, stroke, or heart failure. Most analyses were subject to significant heterogeneity and further research, with careful attention to CV risk factors, is needed to clarify CV risk in DTC survivors.PMID:36074932 | DOI:10.1089/thy.2022.0209

Comparative Effectiveness and Safety of Direct Oral Anticoagulants Versus Warfarin Among Adults With Cancer and Atrial Fibrillation
CONCLUSIONS: Older adults with cancer and atrial fibrillation exposed to DOACs had similar risks of stroke and systemic embolism and major bleeding as those exposed to warfarin. Relative to warfarin, DOAC use was associated with a similar risk of cardiovascular death and a lower risk of all-cause death.PMID:36453260 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCOUTCOMES.122.008951

Nuts and Cardiovascular Disease Outcomes: A Review of the Evidence and Future Directions
Nutrients. 2023 Feb 11;15(4):911. doi: 10.3390/nu15040911.ABSTRACTNuts are nutrient-rich foods that contain many bioactive compounds that are beneficial for cardiovascular health. Higher consumption of nuts has been associated with a reduced risk of several cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in prospective cohort studies, including a 19% and 25% lower risk of CVD incidence and mortality, respectively, and a 24% and 27% lower risk of coronary heart disease incidence and mortality, respectively. An 18% lower risk of stroke mortality, a 15% lower risk of atrial fibrillation, and a 19% lower risk of total mortality have also been o...
