Bagel Brain: What Wheat and Grains Do to the Brain
You know that raisin bagel or bowl of bran cereal you have every morning, or the plate of pasta or spaghetti you have for dinner? Each and every serving erodes the health of your brain. Some of the effects are reversible, while others are cumulative and irreversible. But understand the concepts behind living the Wheat Belly wheat/grain-free lifestyle and you are enormously empowered in regaining control over health, weight, and youthfulness. Transcript: Hi everybody, Doctor William Davis here. Why do I call this Bagel Brain? Well, a number of reasons — consumption of modern wheat and closely-related grains have a whole...

Center for Immigration Studies Shows a Very Small Threat from Terrorists Crossing the Mexican Border
Todd Bensman, the Senior National Security Fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), wrote a recent report entitled “Have Terrorists Crossed Our Border?” in which he presents a list of  “15 suspected terrorists have been apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border, or en route, since 2001.”  Bensman lists these 15 individuals, some of which don’t have names, and describes their actions.  He writes that his research is based on publicly availab le information, so it is likely a “significant under-count” of the actual terrorists who entered.  Bensman also writes that “several reports that strongly ind...

Do you have a sawdust deficiency?
I can hear the titters now. But, seriously, do you have a deficiency of wood fiber in sawdust, i.e., cellulose? No? Then why do people follow the common advice to include breakfast cereals such as All Bran, Fiber One, and Raisin Bran that, yes, are rich in fiber, but mostly rich in the cellulose fiber that is a constituent of sawdust? Cellulose in small quantities, as occurs in green vegetables and fruit is harmless, perhaps modestly beneficial. But there is no need to “supplement” with large quantities, as occurs with such bran or fiber-rich cereals. Nobody suffers from lack of cellulose. Cellulose fiber undou...

Healthy, wholesome easy lunches
Just the idea of packing a lunch elicits a stress response in so many of us. Maybe we’re packing lunch for our kids, maybe it’s for us, but the pressure is on to create a simple yet satisfying, healthy yet hearty, easily transportable meal. This seemingly impossible task is daunting to many people. So much easier to rely on the school cafeteria, lunch trucks, and takeout, right? Wrong! Let us consider the short- and long-term effects of poor choices at lunchtime. Yes, the school cafeteria may offer some healthy-ish options. I can count on my kids not to choose any of them. Likewise our workplace food trucks and fast fo...

Why Does Feeling Optimistic Feel So Weird to You?
When you have low self-esteem, optimism doesn’t come easy. It doesn’t feel that way to everyone. It didn’t feel that way to my old college roommate, who saw every rained-out Sunday as a dazzling opportunity to stay inside cleaning closets and watching old movies while eating avant-garde ice-cream sundaes crafted with weird kitchen scraps — raisins, rock salt, Ritz-cracker crumbs. She used to say that, having spent her high school summers laboring on a tomato cannery’s assembly line, by comparison, our current chores, classes and studies were glorious luxuries about which one must never dare co...

“ Rice ” Pudding
Every once in a while, I missing having some rice pudding. Even though rice does not contain a damaging prolamin protein like the gliadin protein in wheat or the zein in corn, it still contains a mixture of unhealthy components. Wheat germ agglutinin, for instance, the very same protein in wheat, is also in rice, ready to exert its gastrointestinal toxic effects such as direct inflammatory injury to the intestinal lining, blocking the hormone cholecystokinin and thereby causing bile stasis that leads to gallstones, and blocking release of pancreatic enzymes and thereby disrupting the process of normal digestion. Rice also ...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, March 19th 2018
In this study, we did not observe significant age-dependent upregulation of the prominent SASP cytokine Il6 in any tissue, although an upward trend was observed that was consistent in magnitude with previous observations in the heart and kidney. This modest age-related upward trend could be explained by a previous report which demonstrated that senescent cell-secreted IL-6 acts in an autocrine manner, reinforcing the senescent state, rather than inducing senescence or promoting dysfunction in neighboring cells. The decreased expression of Il6 with age we observed in the hypothalamus could be indicative of a lack or ...

Frangollo – Spiced Almond & Millet Pudding. Vegan & Gluten Free.
I’m really excited to share this recipe which I have designed for the Monarch Island Cookbook to celebrate the food of Lanzarote. I’d never heard of Frangollo before, until researching the traditional foods of this beautifully unspoiled island. When I came across it, I knew I had to make a version of it. I am, after all, a sucker for comfort food and this looked mighty cosy. Frangollo is made across the Canary Islands and is traditionally made with millet flour or maize, enriched with butter and eggs and sweetened with hints of citrus and spice. It’s like a thick, creamy semolina pudding but with excitin...

Large Mammal Brain Preservation Prize Won Using a Method of Vitrifixation
A few years ago, the Brain Preservation Foundation awarded the small mammal brain preservation prize to a team working with a vitrifixation method: chemical fixation combined with low temperature storage. It produces excellent preservation of the fine molecular structure of the brain, and of particular interest are those areas in which the data of the mind is thought to be encoded. It is not surprising to see the same approach working for a larger brain. While this isn't a completely straightforward step, as working with larger tissue sections is always harder in many ways than working with smaller tissue sections, it was ...

Gluten, Depression, and Anxiety: The Gut-Brain Link
In this study, 22 participants ate a gluten-free diet low in FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols) for a three-day baseline period, and then received one of three dietary challenges (supplemented with gluten, whey, or placebo) for three days, followed by a three-day minimum washout period before starting the next diet. Researchers assessed the participants at the end of the study using a psychological tool called the Spielberger State-Trait Personality Inventory (STPI). People in the study who consumed gluten had higher overall STPI depression scores compared to those on th...
