How to Stop Sabotaging Your Own Happiness
A while ago, I was laid off from a 9-5 job. It was not one I particularly loved, and I remember feeling bored and stifled with it. Nevertheless, I started to panic, because at least it paid the bills and the thought of financial uncertainty terrified me. But here’s where my own missteps came in: As I started to assemble a resume, apply for new jobs, desperately hoping I would find employment soon, a voice in the back of my head get chiming in. I’ll feel so much better once I get that job interview! I know everything will be okay once I get the job offer. I will be happy again once I am in a new job. Once I get that f...

Best of Our Blogs: April 4, 2017
It amazes me how easy we’re triggered these days. And yet, it makes sense. We were raised to bury our real emotions, to stuff it way down deep so others won’t be uncomfortable. However, when there isn’t a healthy outlet to express what we truly feel, we explode. Many of us are walking time bombs with unhealed wounds, ready to attack if someone says something the wrong way. True connection and intimacy, however, requires vulnerability and discomfort. It doesn’t have to mean being rude, mean or hurtful. It requires us to be self-aware and responsible with our feelings. It requires curiosity and the ab...

Cold symptoms feel worse when you ’re lonely
By Christian Jarrett Already substantial evidence suggests that feeling lonely – regardless of whether we actually are socially isolated based on our number of relationships – is bad for our health, affecting our odds of developing heart disease and other chronic conditions. A new study in Health Psychology extends this literature by showing that feelings of loneliness, but not levels of social isolation, seem to increase the toll of acute illness, in this case by worsening the subjective experience of having a cold. The researchers, led by Angie LeRoy at the University of Houston and Rice University, said their fi...

What are the Big Ideas in Cognitive Neuroscience?
This year, the Cognitive Neuroscience Institute (CNI) and the Max-Planck-Society organized a symposium on Big Ideas in Cognitive Neuroscience. I enjoyed this fun forum organized by David Poeppel and Mike Gazzaniga. The format included three pairs of speakers on the topics of memory, language, and action/motor who “consider[ed] some major challenges and cutting-edge advances, from molecular mechanisms to decoding approaches to network computations.”Co-host Marcus Raichle recalled his inspiration for the symposium: a similar Big Ideas session at the Society for Neuroscience meeting. But human neuroscience was absent from...

Guilty Conscience? Feel Good by Doing Good
“These testimonies of a good conscience are pleasant, and such a natural pleasure is very beneficial to us; it is the only payment that can never fail.” – Montaigne If you’re experiencing a guilty conscience, you may think there’s no way out of it. We all know how self-destructive guilt feels. On the other hand, what does it mean to have a good conscience? Is this something that anyone can experience or is it only for people that some consider saints? Indeed, most of us have encountered someone that always seems above reproach, seemingly faultless. We may feel our own shortcomings in comparison and harbor a guilt...

Mindfulness and the New ABC of Managing Difficult Feelings — for Kids
I did an experiment with my children tonight and a new favorite practice was born. Let me explain how it came about. I have been working with a short, soothing practice with my adult clients that is easy to remember and do “in the moment” as we go through our busy days. (I would love you to try it and post your feedback here. It takes between 2 minutes — and however long is helpful for you. The more you do it, the more it will become your automatic “go to” practice with difficult emotions.) I call it The New ABC because it helps me recall the steps when I describe it to clients. It is something t...

Spreading Hope for Depression Through Adventure Racing
Depression is a common bond. It brings people to me that inspire me in ways I never thought possible. Shawn Beardon is one of those people. Shawn reached out to me via my foundation, iFred, and asked if we could work together raising awareness for mental health issues while making a dream of his come true. As iFred has big dreams of teaching hope around the world, it seemed like a perfect partnership. What he is about to attempt is mind blowing, as those with depression know during our darkest days, what he is trying to accomplish is probably the last thing we would ever imagine doing. If you know of any major brand sponso...

Therapeutic Space
In my search for how others have thought about the issue of therapeutic space, I encountered some of the writing of Yi-Fu Tuan, a geographer. Tuan wrote a very interesting little book, Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience in which he muses about how people think about space and place, home and neighborhood. One of his thoughts is that space is what we encounter when are are someplace new and unfamiliar and it becomes place as we learn its features and landmarks. This leads me to contemplate the fact that every time a new patient comes to see me, not only is the patient is a space which is not yet place, but so ...

Body-Positive Women Do These 10 Things Every Day!
We have all been there: ten minutes before a party, throwing every dress on the floor trying to find the magical one that doesn’t make our backside too large or our stomach too prominent. Yeah, so we bought a dress for this occasion just last week, but suddenly, it doesn’t fit right. And it’s not because our bodies have changed! Rather, it’s because our mindset has changed. Maybe we are a bit more tired this evening. Maybe we had a rough day on the job. Whatever it is, we lost sight of how drop-dead gorgeous we are inside and out! And it’s time we get that body confidence back. So I went straight to the expert...

A five-minute chat with preschoolers about their past or future selves helps them make better decisions
By Christian Jarrett There could be an Arctic blizzard blowing outside for all little Mary cares. The fact is, she’s hot from running around indoors, and no matter how much you try to explain to Mary that her future self – the one that’s about to go walking in the cold – would really appreciate that she put her coat on, Mary, like most kids aged under five, finds it very difficult to step outside of the present and consider her future needs. While psychologists have already spent a lot of time demonstrating the limitations of young children’s ability to plan for the future, until now they’...
