PODCAST: What Does a Panic Attack Feel Like?
In this episode of the Psych Central Show, hosts Gabe and Vincent discuss anxiety disorders, which can be debilitating on many levels and strain even the closest relationships, often due to a lack of understanding of what anxiety disorder is like. Listen as our hosts describe what it’s like, from mild social anxiety to full-blown, sweat-dripping panic attacks. Listen as Our Hosts Discuss Anxiety Disorders and Panic Attacks “That is where anxiety disorder, in my opinion, is the most damaging – your behavior mirrors bad behavior. New meta-analysis undermines the myth that negative emotions can cause cancer
Discussion of factors increasing the risk of cancer is today not only the domain of medical doctors and psycho-oncologists, but is also engaged in by some alternative medicine proponents, pseudopsychologists, and fringe psychotherapists, whose opinions are disseminated by journalists, some more thorough than others (see myth #26 in 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology for more background). Among these opinions is the common claim that negative thinking, pessimism, and stress create the conditions for the cells in our body to run amok, and for cancer to develop. Similar declarations accompany therapeutic propositions for c...

Over time, self-injury itself can become a habitual, nearly addictive behavior, and 8.7 percent of self-injurers are also addicts. Erin Hardy, a Wisconsin-based therapist, found herself in a quandary when an uptick of people who self-injured came to her about five years ago. This was a new area to her practice, so Hardy sought consultation with her colleagues on resources, but they came up empty. An internet search left Hardy with unsatisfactory results. “All the sudden I had this flood of individuals that were engaging in self-harm,” says Hardy. “There is really nothing [online] about self-harm other th...

The Fun Police
“He took a vacation,” they whispered in hushed tones. “What will his colleagues and supervisors think?” I smiled. Actually — correction — I smirked. In an era of unlimited vacation time (but not actual vacation), too many of us are shackled to our office chair. We dream of that European sojourn. “I will get there someday,” we say. But like those ill-fated New Year’s Resolutions, one year turns into the next. There is a(nother) sales call or dance recital interfering with our vacation plans. And, yes, interfering is the correct word. We are skillful at concocting any reason to postpone that well-de...

The Cost of Not Paying Attention, and How to Come Back into Balance
Sometimes, when we are not paying attention or attending to what is in front of us in our lives, we throw ourselves out of balance. I was reminded of this last summer when I realized in a moment of panic that I had forgotten to turn the water off from the hose outside that I was using to add some water to our pool. This was a big mistake on many accounts, with consequences such as overflowing the pool, wasting precious water, potentially draining our well, during a drought no less, not to mention throwing the perfectly...
