World Health Organization Shines Light and Spreads Hope for Depression with #LetsTalk
April 7th, 2017 the World Health Organization launches a year-long campaign called on a global health issue for Global Health Day, and this year that focus is depression via #LetsTalk. IFred joins in that effort with a campaign asking for all to plant sunflowers around the world, post a sign and share the message of Hope, that depression is treatable. The Global Day for Hope site reinforces this message through a platform, and encourages all to plant sunflower gardens in their communities and add it to the map, giving a strong, collective, unified voice to the cause.  According to a report by the World Health Organization...

5 Convincing Ways Controlling Partners Deceive You
Scary. Many readers have let me know that my pieces about the signs of controlling behavior and the steps to take in leaving a controlling partner have resonated with them. Unfortunately, emotionally abusive relationships are far too common, and I have also received many messages from people who have seen themselves — or more often, their partners — in these posts. EVERY Single One Of These 10 Things Is Emotional Abuse — Yes, Really In addition to being difficult to break away from, controlling behavior can sometimes be difficult to spot, especially early in a relationship. Here ’s a simple way to boost your learning from videos: the “prequestion”
By Christian Jarrett The “testing effect” is well-established in psychology: this is the finding that answering questions about what you’ve learned leads to better retention than simply studying the material for longer. Testing is beneficial because the act of recall entrenches learned material in our memories, and when we can’t answer, this helps us make our future revision more targeted. Less well-known and less well-understood is the effect of “prequestions”: questions pertaining to upcoming information that you attempt to answer before you’ve started learning that informati...

Keeping Anxiety at Bay: My Arsenal of Recovery
Looking back on my childhood, there was never really a time I wasn’t unsure of myself. I never thought I was cute enough, smart enough, funny enough or fun enough. In fact, I doubted that any of my playmates actually liked me. On my birthday, I wondered whether my friends would actually show up to my party. And if they did, was it because my parents paid them to come? If so, how much? How much was I worth? Decades later, I realize this was one of the first indications that I suffered from anxiety. Through countless hours of therapy, research and reflection, I have come to understand the many manifestations of anxiety an...

‘ Help Me Figure Myself Out ’ : The Paved Road to the Adolescent Mind
“What do I do? I don’t know what to do with him anymore!” This is one of the many scenarios of a frantic parent knocking on the therapist’s door. Teenage years are tough, let’s not kid ourselves. We have been there, we remember. In my practice I’ve consulted numerous parents on teens’ presenting problems such as: indifference, apathy, resistance, verbal/physical aggressiveness, destructive behavior, mood swings and a complete emotional shutdown expressed by their teenage sons and daughters. “Where did my child go?” I would hear the parent ask during our consultations. “He was happy, balanced, easy goi...

The ways that student samples differ from the public varies around the world
By Christian Jarrett Biologists have their fruit flies and rats, psychologists have students. An overwhelming amount of behavioral science is conducted with young people at universities on the assumption that it’s safe to generalise from this species of human to people more generally. There are some common-sense reasons for thinking this might be a problem and also some more specific issues, which we’ve documented before, such as that burnt out students could be skewing the findings. Now a recent study in PLOS One shows that the ways students differ from the public is different depending on which country y...

Uncovering Your Hidden Genius Through Curiosity
Inside every human being is a burning desire to learn and understand the world. And in today’s age of seemingly unlimited information, this thirst for knowledge has never been more important or relevant. Yet, after trying to fit our fingers in electrical outlets, experimenting with one too many drugs, sending a few more drunk texts than we might like, or barely escaping the danger of our libidos, most of us think we are better off putting a lid on our curiosities. We believe grownups should tighten the reins on their desires, because if they don’t put a lid on them, society slaps one on. Called “The Pandora Effect...

Why more highly educated people are less into conspiracy theories
By Christian Jarrett In this era of “fake news” and rising populism, encountering conspiracy theories is becoming a daily phenomenon. Some people usually shrug them off – they find them too simplistic, biased or far-fetched – but others are taken in. And if a person believes one kind of conspiracy theory, they usually believe others. Psychologists are very interested in why some people are more inclined to belief in conspiracy theories, especially since the consequences can be harmful: for example, by avoiding getting their kids vaccinated, believers in vaccination conspiracies can harm wider public heal...

The Boys Club
Over the past several years sexual assault has become an increasingly popular subject. Whether this is because there is a rise in sexual assault or because it is simply more acceptable to openly discuss the matter, is unclear. Whatever the case, sexual abuse/assault/violence and harassment has exploded into common conversation. A genre deemed ‘Misery Lit’ captures almost exclusively the lives of those who have overcome abuse. The memoir explosion and craze for reading about sexual abuse has mainly made its debut in America. While this could be due to the exploitative nature of America, it could just as easily have for...

Living with depression — and especially coping with chronic depression — demands courage over any other virtue: the courage to incorporate the lessons we’ve learned from the past in our strategies for better health in the future; the courage to ask for help when we need it, and to persevere in new directions of healing; and the courage to keep moving through self-defeating thoughts, meeting our pain with compassion, and keeping our body and mind in motion — on the path toward emotional resilience.
