Valorization of pineapple rind for bromelain extraction using microwave assisted technique: optimization, purification, and structural characterization
J Food Sci Technol. 2024 Mar;61(3):551-562. doi: 10.1007/s13197-023-05863-4. Epub 2023 Oct 13.ABSTRACTHuge amount of waste is generated by the pineapple processing industries which raises concerns regarding its safe disposal into the environment. This ever-increasing problem of waste management can be solved by the valorization of pineapple by-products to high-value compounds. The extraction of proteolytic enzyme, bromelain from pineapple rind using green techniques can help to overcome the drawbacks associated with conventional methods. In the present study, the extraction of bromelain from pineapple rind using microwave ...

Phytotherapy in periodontics as an effective and sustainable supplemental treatment: a narrative review
CONCLUSIONS: Several readily available herbal formulations are now available on the market and have been shown to be effective as supplemental periodontal phytotherapy. However, these should be used under the supervision of a dental professional to ensure optimal benefits and effectiveness. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the understanding of suggested herbal prescription practices among dental professionals.PMID:38290997 | DOI:10.5051/jpis.2301420071 (Source: Journal of Periodontal and Implant Science)

Disparities in Olfactory Dysfunction in African Americans
CONCLUSION: On both tests of olfaction, AA performed worse than Whites and a greater proportion of AA were considered hyposmic compared to Whites. This is a discrepancy with self-reported olfaction, which showed no difference between Whites and AA. AA performed significantly worse than their White counterparts on several scents, with possible implications regarding cultural appropriateness of scents used in olfactory testing.PMID:38235801 | DOI:10.1177/00034894231222693 (Source: The Annals of Otology, Rhinology, and Laryngology)

Concentration of Heavy Metals in Traditional and Industrial Fruit Juices from Iran: Probabilistic Risk Assessment Study
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2024 Jan 8. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-04049-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExposure to heavy metals can endanger the health of exposed people in the long term. The consumption of fruit juice is increasing; it is important to estimate the health risk of consumers due to heavy metals. The current study was carried out for the analysis of toxic metals (lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd)) and essential elements (copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn)) in 60 samples of traditional and industrial fruit juices (10 samples of different brands of apple, orange, grape, peach, mango, and pineapple) in Hamadan, West Ira...
