Family-centered Care for Children with Disabilities in Japan-the Origin and Future of the "Ryouiku"
Phys Ther Res. 2024;27(1):1-5. doi: 10.1298/ptr.R0029. Epub 2024 Mar 12.ABSTRACTFamily-centered care is recommended as the best practice in pediatric physiotherapy. It is a philosophy that pediatric physiotherapists should be familiar with, as it relates to the health of the child as well as the family. However, family-centered care has not been adequately taught in physiotherapy education in Japan. The term "Ryouiku" was coined in 1940 in Japan. The concept of the Ryouiku is essentially Evidence-Based Medicine and is the very essence of family-centered care with a focus on function. By re-thinking the Ryouiku and applying...

Early Ambulation Following Lung Resection Surgery: Impact on Short-term Outcomes in Patients with Lung Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Ambulation for ≥10 m during initial pulmonary rehabilitation after lung resection surgery may yield short-term benefits as evidenced by improvements in various outcomes. However, it may not significantly affect the PPC incidence.PMID:38690530 | PMC:PMC11057388 | DOI:10.1298/ptr.E10277 (Source: Physical Therapy)

Development and Validation of a Decision Tree Analysis Model for Predicting Home Discharge in a Convalescent Ward: A Single Institution Study
CONCLUSION: The predictive model demonstrated more than moderate predictive accuracy, suggesting its utility in clinical practice. Grooming emerged as a variable with the highest explanatory power for determining home discharge.PMID:38690531 | PMC:PMC11057389 | DOI:10.1298/ptr.E10267 (Source: Physical Therapy)

The Assessment and Response of Rehabilitation Professionals to Sudden Deterioration in Symptoms: An Analysis of the National Database in Japan
CONCLUSION: We attempted to identify problems analyzing the response by RPs to acute deterioration using the database and construct an appropriate response model. It resulted that RPs need to obtain patient information in advance and integrate/interpret it appropriately based on accurate assessment of conscious, circulation and respiration for rapid response. A model including integration/interpretation for appropriate post-response by RPs was constructed using the FRAM.PMID:38690533 | PMC:PMC11057387 | DOI:10.1298/ptr.E10272 (Source: Physical Therapy)

The Effect of Total Knee Replacement on Dual-Task Gait Performance in Older Adults
CONCLUSION: The absence of an effect of TKR on gait DTCs can potentially underlie increased fall risk after TKR. Results from this study emphasize the significance of balance as a measure and focal point for rehabilitation after TKR.IMPACT: This study contributes to our understanding of the attentional cost of walking in people before and after TKR, as well as to factors associated with it. Results from this work can assist formulation of rehabilitation programs for people with knee osteoarthritis.PMID:38691445 | DOI:10.1093/ptj/pzae067 (Source: Physical Therapy)

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1758: Building a Bridge to Community: A Pragmatic Randomized Trial Examining a Combined Physical Therapy and Resistance Exercise Intervention for People after Head and Neck Cancer
Discussion: A group-based combined physiotherapeutic and lower-body resistance exercise program was feasible and effective. Findings are limited to individuals who had undergone a surgical neck dissection procedure. Given the complexity of head and neck cancer, further pragmatic interdisciplinary research is warranted. Immersive virtual reality as a complement to physical therapy for Parkinson ’s disease – A randomized controlled trial
Background: Virtual reality (VR) can provide intensive motor-cognitive training through multisensory environments, holding potential to complement Parkinson ’s Disease (PD) rehabilitation programs. (Source: Parkinsonism and Related Disorders)

Targeting sedentary behavior decreases depressive symptoms and improves sleep in people with Parkinson ’s Disease
Background: Physical Therapy (PT) and regular exercise are an integral part of the management of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Exercise is also known to have a mitigating effect on depressive symptoms. There is increasing evidence that decreasing sedentary behavior is also a valuable tool to manage PD symptoms. We looked at the effect of decreasing sedentary behavior on depressive symptoms in PD by offering an opportunity to replace sedentary behavior with slow paced standing and stepping behavior in the home environment. Role of virtual reality in examining the effect of fear of falling (FOF) on postural stability in individuals without and with Parkinsons disease in Egypt: a mixed-methods feasibility study protocol
This study will assess a range of FOF-related responses, including cognitive factors, neuromuscular response and postural stability. Methods and analysis This feasibility study will consist of four phases: the first two phases will include people without PD, while the other two will include people diagnosed with PD. Participants will be assessed for direct and indirect responses to real life, as well as virtual environment walking scenarios that may induce FOF. Data from questionnaires, different neurophysiological assessments, movement and gait parameters, alongside evaluations of usability and acceptability, will be col...

Chiropractic spinal manipulation and likelihood of tramadol prescription in adults with radicular low back pain: a retrospective cohort study using US data
Conclusions This study found that US adults initially receiving CSM for radicular LBP had a reduced likelihood of receiving a tramadol prescription over 1-year follow-up. These findings should be corroborated by a prospective study to minimise residual confounding. (Source: BMJ Open)

Psychological factors show limited association with the severity of Achilles tendinopathy
CONCLUSION: The study suggests that psychological factors demonstrate limited association with the severity of Achilles tendinopathy. While self-efficacy for chronic pain was weakly associated, its clinical relevance remains uncertain. Future research, particularly longitudinal studies, should explore the influence of psychosocial factors on treatment adherence and response to enhance management strategies for Achilles tendon pain.PMID:38685174 | DOI:10.1016/j.ptsp.2024.04.004 (Source: Physical Therapy)
