Targeting sedentary behavior decreases depressive symptoms and improves sleep in people with Parkinson ’s Disease

Background: Physical Therapy (PT) and regular exercise are an integral part of the management of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Exercise is also known to have a mitigating effect on depressive symptoms. There is increasing evidence that decreasing sedentary behavior is also a valuable tool to manage PD symptoms. We looked at the effect of decreasing sedentary behavior on depressive symptoms in PD by offering an opportunity to replace sedentary behavior with slow paced standing and stepping behavior in the home environment.
