The 2023 Healthcare Power Ranking Of Tech Giants
Major tech companies have been venturing into healthcare for years, and we’ve been following and analysing their progress along the way. We have scrutinized their efforts individually (see: Google, Apple, Amazon, NVIDIA, Microsoft, IBM) and in summaries and more summaries, analysed what we can learn from the tech giants-healthcare-collaborations and even dared to publish some forecasts about what we expect their next moves will be.  And most recently we finished a major update on one of our most popular e-books, Tech Giants In Healthcare. As the book is out now, here is a 2023 power ranking of the most important non-...

Aspects of Social Determinants of Health: Acting on SDoH
Previous articles in this series introduced the importance of social determinants of health (SDoH) and explained how it can be captured and classified. In this article, I’ll show how many hospitals, payers, and other institutions are acting on that data. Of course, the staff of a clinic or hospital don’t go around looking for apartments the way they actively look for a long-term care facility. Instead, their case managers partner with community institutions to help patients. But the clinic or hospital is a crucial linchpin in connecting the patient to this help. According to Dr. Victor Lee, vice president of cl...

Your Insulin of the Future Could Be " Made in China " if Big PBMs Have a Say in the Matter
Back on June 16, 2022, I published an article on LinkedIn entitled "How the Civica Insulin Announcement May Be Disruptive to the PBM Kickback Scheme" (see the article athttps://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-civica-insulin-announcement-may-disruptive-pbm-scheme-strumello/ if you wish to read it) which predicted that a growing number of insulin biosimilars whose active pharmaceutical ingredients (API ' s) are cultured in offshore laboratories are forecast to hit the U.S. market in the next few years. According to the FDA and the individual companies whom I also follow on LinkedIn, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) typ...

Follow me on Meta Threads Under User-Name " sstrumello1 " !
I was kind of hoping it wouldn ' t come to this, but it now seems inevitable. Twitter/X has become unsustainable as a viable social platform, so I will (eventually) be migrating to the newer rival run by Meta (fka Facebook). Recall that in August 2023, sensing that Twitter under Elon Musk ' s ownership was would die as a social platform because the owner was clueless about running a social platform, rival Meta stepped in to fill the void with a new application it calls Threadshttps://www.threads.net/. I know about Jack Dorsey ' s BlueSky, but that new social platform still has some serious accessibility issues right n...

Announcements, Insights, and Perspectives from the Oracle Health Conference
One of the nice things about living in Las Vegas is that almost all the health IT conferences come to Las Vegas.  Sadly, that wasn’t actually true for the Cerner user conference which was held in Kansas City.  However, now that Oracle bought Cerner, the Oracle Health conference is now co-located with Oracle World and is being held in Las Vegas. Of course, there are also downsides to conferences being in Las Vegas where family considerations pull me away from the event.  For example, I missed Larry Ellison’s keynote, but Kristian Feterik did a nice job capturing at least part of Ellison’s vision for Ora...

Non-invasive Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (TES) shows early promise to treat ADHD symptoms in children
While tDCS uses constant current intensity, tRNS and tACS use oscillating current. The vertical axis represents the current intensity in milliamp (mA), while the horizontal axis illustrates the time-course. Source: Wikipedia. Many children with ADHD benefit from medication treatment, behavioral treatment, or their combination, but others do not. In addition, parents are often reluctant to start their child on medication and high quality behavioral treatments are not readily accessible in many areas. The long-term efficacy of these treatments is also less than desirable. Thus, despite these evidence-based ADHD treatments, t...

Support Growing for Pharmacists to Ease Physician Workload
In a recent survey, Surescripts found growing support for pharmacists to prescribe a select number of medications to patients, thus easing the workload on physicians. Technologies like direct messaging and record sharing is making this possible. Physician Shortage Physicians everywhere are overworked. This is especially true in primary care where there are not enough physicians to meet the growing patient demand. This is leading to access challenges and to burnout. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) predicts that by 2034 the US will be short: Between 17,800 and 48,000 primary care physicians Between 21,00...

All Too Short Comments on the 10th Aging Research and Drug Discovery (ARDD) Meeting
I attended the 10th Aging Research and Drug Discovery (ARDD) conference in Copenhagen recently, alongside my Chief Scientific Officer at Repair Biotechnologies, Mourad Topors. If one wanted to take in all of the presentations and take notes, as I've done in the past, ARDD would be much more of a test of endurance than other longevity industry conferences. It is five 12 hour days, starting with networking at 8am, the last presentations going on past 8pm, and then socializing at nearby bars afterwards for the truly dedicated. This on top of jet lag for those coming in from the US in direction and Asia in the other. The inten...

GAO reports. CMS spins. Patients suffer.
Medicare beneficiaries paid four times more for prescription drugs than their plan sponsors did in 2021, according to a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on Medicare Part D drugs. According to the report, beneficiaries paid $21 billion for prescription drugs in 2021, while plan sponsors only paid about $5.3 billion, according to the study of 79 of the 100 Part D drugs with the most rebates.
