This study aimed to investigate the association between frailty index and circulating CAP2 concentration in 467 community-dwelling older adults (median age: 79; range: 65-92 years). The selected robust regression model showed that circulating CAP2 concentration was not associated with chronological age, as well as sex and education. However, circulating CAP2 concentration was significantly and inversely associated with the frailty index: a 0.1-unit increase in frailty index leads to ~0.5-point mean decrease in CAP2 concentration. Furthermore, mean CAP2 concentration was significantly lower in frail participants (i.e., fr...

Progress Towards Therapies for Transthyretin Amyloidosis
Transthyretin is one of the few proteins in the body that can misfold in a way that encourages other copies of the protein to also misfold, forming solid aggregates called amyloid that disrupt tissue structure and function. The resulting condition, transthyretin amyloidosis, clogs up cardiac tissue and thereby contributes to a fraction of all heart failure cases. It is thought to be a major cause of mortality in supercentenarians. Approved therapies targeting a more aggressive form of the condition resulting from a mutated transthyretin gene will not be useful against the much more common version of the condition, as they ...

When Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company Says Your Prescription is " Out of stock "
My followers may recall that about a year ago (on August 22, 2023), I blogged about (see https://blog.sstrumello.com/2022/08/generic-crestor-pricing-insanity.html for the post) that I had made a conscious decision to simply disintermediate my own insurance pharmacy benefit to buy an inexpensive generic statin drug because my own pharmacy benefit manager was screwing me. Currently, I ' m covered by Aetna which is now owned by CVS Health, which also owns the  PBM known as Caremark. Caremark was robbing me on the statin. It was overcharging me. They were trying to charge me $33.85 for a 90-day supply of a cheap...

Enhancing Patient Adherence & Improving Treatment Outcomes
The following is a guest article by Christine Lee, Head of Health Partnerships at AnalyticsIQ Patients seeking healthcare for their ailments often receive detailed treatment plans tailored to their individual needs. However, the efficacy of these treatment plans relies heavily on patient adherence. An MBA in Regulatory Confusion
Welcome to the world of therapeutic use of tissues – an exciting and evolving arena of 21st century medicine and one of the many areas of medical products regulated by the FDA. And, as with many other areas of the agency’s jurisdiction, peculiar bureaucratic intervention and lack of clarity are causing harm to patients and costing American jobs. (Source: drugwonks.com Blog)

Fight Aging! Newsletter, July 31st 2023
In conclusion, an SBP level below 130 mmHg was found to be associated with longevity among older women. The longer SBP was controlled at a level between 110 and 130 mmHg, the higher the survival probability to age 90. Preventing age-related rises in SBP and increasing the time with controlled BP levels constitute important measures for achieving longevity. « Back to Top (Source: Fight Aging!)

Lobbying Efforts for the Development of Means to Treat Aging are at a Very Early Stage
That so many people turn their hand to lobbying government is a sad statement of the character of our era. Those engaged in getting things done start to feel, at some level of funding, that lobbying is a necessary defense on the one hand, against Big Pharma entities who will use regulators to impede and coerce competition, and on the other hand a way to access greater funding and publicity. The trough of public funds is ever an attractive proposition, and never as easy to access without tainting everything involved as people would like to think it is. A world with smaller, less powerful governments would be a world in whic...
