Penicillin V four times daily for five days versus three times daily for 10 days in patients with pharyngotonsillitis caused by group A streptococci: randomised controlled, open label, non-inferiority study
this research article concludes that Penicillin V four times daily for five days was non-inferior in clinical outcome to penicillin V three times daily for 10 days in patients with pharyngotonsillitis caused by group A streptococci. The number of relapses and complications did not differ between the two intervention groups. Five day treatment with penicillin V four times daily might be an alternative to the currently recommended 10 day regimen. (Source: Current Awareness Service for Health (CASH))

Superbug MRSA susceptible to existing antibiotics
Methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a serious problem, forcing doctors to turn to antibiotics other than penicillin or penicillin derivatives, or to different drug cocktails, which are often less effective in treating hospital and community based infections. Focus group study exploring the issues and the solutions to incorrect penicillin allergy-labelled patients: an antibiotic stewardship patient safety initiative
Focus group (17 hospital doctors, nurses& pharmacists) found that identifying& delabelling incorrect penicillin allergy was a complex task and not a priority, but that they felt confident removing erroneous allergy records if the patient was able to describe the reaction. Clinical features and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of culture-proven neonatal sepsis in a tertiary children's hospital, 2013 to 2017.
Neonatal sepsis (NS) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in neonates, but data on the etiology and antibiotic susceptibility patterns of pathogens are limited. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical characteristics, risk factors, and the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of pathogenic microbes associated with NS at a tertiary children ' s hospital in Shanghai, China. Most isolates of Gram-positive bacteria were sensitive to vancomycin, linezolid, minocycline and tigecycline, of which more than 90% were resistant to penicillin. Most isolates of Gram-negative bacteria were sensitive to amika...

The race to beat antibiotic resistance is on – so where do phages fit in? | Richard James
The GM virus treatment that saved Isabelle Holdaway is a start, at least, in the fight against drug resistanceThe first antibiotic was discovered by Paul Ehrlich in 1909 and cured syphilis-infected rabbits. At that time about 10% of the population of London were infected with syphilis and there were no effective treatments. Despite the tedious injection procedure and side effects, Salvarsan, together with the less toxic derivative Neosalvarsan, enjoyed the status of the most frequently prescribed drug until its replacement by penicillin in the 1940s. The postwar period was the beginning of a 20-year golden age of antibioti...

Project aims to revive natural product discovery
(Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) The mid-20th century was the golden age of natural product discovery. Scientists discovered groundbreaking drugs, like penicillin and tetracycline, from sources in nature. But as the search for natural products continued, pharmaceutical companies kept finding the same products over and over again. The era of genomics brought success in discovering new natural products, but only on a very small scale. Now, a new project aims to discover new natural products on a large scale by using synthetic biology and automation. (Source: EurekAlert...
