Word-level prosodic and metrical influences on Hawaiian glottal stop realization
This study investigates whether the realization is conditioned by word-level prosodic or metrical factors, which would be consistent with research demonstrating that segmental distribution and phonetic realization can be sensitive to word-internal structure. At the same time, it has also been shown that prosodic prominence, such as syllable stress, can affect phonetic realization. Data come from the 1970s-80s radio program Ka Leo Hawai'i. Using Parker Jones' (Parker Jones, Oiwi. 2010. A computational phonology and morphology of Hawaiian. University of Oxford DPhil. thesis) computational prosodic grammar, words were parsed ...

Advances in Research
During our careers we have seen major changes in the types of research conducted, the source material used for research, and the areas of interest being investigated. One of the most renowned researchers in the United Kingdom was Harold Ellis, CBE, FRCS. Professor Ellis was the chair of surgery at the Westminster Hospital commencing in 1962. He often recounted the research methodology to which he was exposed when he trained at the University of Oxford in the 1940 ’s. Specifically, he somewhat jokingly told of how he was called to the office by the chair of surgery and asked “Ellis, did you see the Times this past Sunda...

Global trends in COVID-19 Alzheimer's related research: a bibliometric analysis
ConclusionThe disease caused by the COVID-19 virus infection related to Alzheimer's disease has attracted significant attention worldwide. The major hot topics in 2020 were: “Alzheimer' disease,” COVID-19,” risk factors,” care,” and “Parkinson's disease.” During the 2 years 2021 and 2022, researchers were also interested in “neurodegenerative diseases,” “cognitive impairment,” and “quality of life,” which require further investigation. Estimation of separable direct and indirect effects in a continuous-time illness-death model
We present the conditions for identifiability, which include some arguably restrictive structural assumptions on the treatment mechanism, and discuss when such assumptions are valid. The identifying functionals are used to construct plug-in estimators for the sepa rable direct and indirect effects. We also present multiply robust and asymptotically efficient estimators based on the efficient influence functions. We verify the theoretical properties of the estimators in a simulation study, and we demonstrate the use of the estimators using data from a Danish r egistry study. (Source: Lifetime Data Analysis)

Smoking Cessation Does Not Worsen Mental Health Outcomes, Study Finds
Smoking cessation may be associated with improved mental health outcomes among people with and without psychiatric disorders, according to astudy published yesterday inJAMA Network Open.“Many people who smoke state that they want to quit, but many continue because they report that smoking helps relieve stress and offers other mental health benefits,” wrote Angela Difeng Wu, M.Sc., and Min Gao, Ph.D., of the University of Oxford, and colleagues. “The belief that cigarettes are calming is widespread, and some health professionals may deter people with mental health disorders from trying to stop smoking.”Wu, Gao, and ...

Failed cancer therapy revived as powerful tumor killer when combined with newer drugs
Patients with a type of liver cancer known as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) often face an anxious wait after their tumor is removed. In up to half of these people, the cancer will return within 2 years after surgery or a treatment that destroys their tumors with heat. Researchers haven’t identified any therapies that can stop it from coming back. That could change thanks to a class of drugs once seen as a failed revolution in cancer therapy. Angiogenesis inhibitors, which throttle tumors by cutting off their blood supply, never measured up to expectations when they reached clinical trials more than 2 decades ago. ...

The state of current research on COVID-19 and antibiotic use: global implications for antimicrobial resistance
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first bibliometric analysis of COVID-19-related research on antibiotics. Research was carried out in response to global requests to increase the fight against AMR and awareness of the issue. More restrictions on the use of antibiotics are urgently needed from policy makers and authorities, more so than in the current situation.PMID:37173756 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-023-00386-2 (Source: Journal of Health, Population, and Nutrition)
