Comparison of Endoscopic Versus Microscopic Tympanoplasty: A Prospective Randomised Study
ConclusionOn comparing endoscopic versus microscopic tympanoplasty in patients of mucosal chronic otitis media, success rate in terms of graft acceptance and hearing improvement was equal between both groups. However, visualisation of middle ear structures was better in endoscopic method. Operating time was shorter in endoscopic tympanoplasty. Chronic otorrhea and osteomyelitis of the external auditory canal by Achromobacter xylosoxidans: an uncommon diagnosis
ConclusionsAtypical pathogens such asA. xylosoxidans can be the cause of chronic otitis externa. Early diagnosis and specific antibiotherapy can prevent the development of further complications, such as osteomyelitis. In these cases, otic cultures play an essential role to identify the causal germ. This is the first case of EAC osteomyelitis due toA. xylosoxidans reported to date. Antimicrobial resistance and virulence profiling of < em > Staphylococcus pseudintermedius < /em > isolated from cats, Bangladesh
The objectives of the cross-sectional study were to estimate the prevalence, antimicrobial resistance pattern, and detection of diverse resistance as well as virulence genes of S. pseudintermedius in cats. A standard bacteriological method, species-specific gene and different antimicrobial resistance as well as virulence genes were confirmed by PCR assay. A total of 233 swab samples were collected from different body sites of 102 cats, among them 146 swabs from 73 healthy cats, and 87 from 29 diseased cats. Overall, prevalence of S. pseudintermedius in cats was 12.01%, while dermatitis and otitis affected cats were 26.08% ...

The importance of mechanical and biological cues of tympanic membrane grafts to ensure optimal regeneration
Biomater Adv. 2024 Mar 11;159:213827. doi: 10.1016/j.bioadv.2024.213827. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is often associated with permanent tympanic membrane (TM) perforation and conductive hearing loss. The current clinical gold standard, using autografts and allografts, suffers from several drawbacks. Artificial replacement materials can help to overcome these drawbacks. Therefore, scaffolds fabricated through digital light processing (DLP) were herein created to support TM regeneration. Various UV-curable printing inks, including gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA), gelatin-norbornene-norb...

Incidence of pneumococcal disease in children ≤48 months old in the United States: 1998-2019
CONCLUSIONS: Incidence rates of IPD, ACP, and AOM decreased in children with commercial insurance and Medicaid coverage from 1998 to 2019. However, burden of disease remained substantial, with higher annual IRs for IPD and ACP for Medicaid-insured vs. commercially-insured children. IPD and inpatient ACP were most common in the youngest children 0-6 months old, followed by the 7-12-month age group.PMID:38485640 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.03.013 (Source: Vaccine)

Otorhinolaryngological Manifestations among People Living with HIV/AIDS in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: a Cross-Sectional Study
AbstractHuman immunodeficiency virus/Acquired immunodeficiency virus (HIV/AIDS) is well known to be a major public health problem globally. On the other hand, HIV/AIDS is associated with various otorhinolaryngological manifestations. On the other hand, there has been a global reduction in the burden of otorhinolaryngological manifestations since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy though there are limited studies on otorhinolaryngological manifestations among HIV/AIDS patients in Tanzania. A hospital based descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at Ilala District in Dar es Salaam from November ...

Different Bacteria and their Antibiotic Sensitivity Patterns in Patients of Chronic Otitis Media-Active Mucosal Disease at a Secondary Care Centre in Delhi
AbstractChronic Otitis Media is characterized by distinct bacteriology compared with Acute Otitis Media, with COM being highly likely to harbor multiple bacteria of anaerobic and aerobic types of organisms (Cameron and Hussam K. El-Kashlan, xxx). In some patients, chronic infection with otorrhea will persist despite aggressive medical therapy. With the large number of cases of COM which presents to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, and a majority being resistant to the common medications, we decided to undertake this study to have a better understanding of the bacterial epidemiology, the resistance, and what antibiotic to u...
