Why are women using CBD products — and do they work?
Cannabidiol (CBD) oil and other products containing CBD are being touted as a natural, organic remedy for a wide range of women’s health concerns. Sellers of these products make many claims: CBD has calming effects on sleep, mood, and anxiety; eases hot flashes and improves bone density by balancing hormonal changes of menopause; and has anti-inflammatory properties that clear skin, cure acne, and calm rosacea. It’s promoted for PMS symptoms like bloating and mood swings. And CBD-infused lubricants claim to boost arousal and enjoyment of sex. So, how much of this is true? First, what is CBD? CBD is a major ingredient i...

Virtual Hydrogens
ConclusionHydrogen is ubiquitous in organic molecules. Organic chemists discovered long ago that drawing every hydrogen leads to noise. Cheminformatics inherited both hydrogen-suppressed drawings and representation formats born in relative computational poverty. Somehow we've muddled along, using the term "implicit hydrogens" in the most inappropriate places. The result has been garbled communication and inconsistency.Virtual hydrogens supply the missing piece. They are easy to spot as an explicit integer hydrogen count associated with a specific atom. Virtual and atomic hydrogens can be mixed freely, provided that desirab...

This pediatrician gives her kids candy on Halloween. Here are 7 guilt-free candy tips.
I’m a pediatrician, mom of three. And to many, this may come as a surprise, but yes, I give my kids candy on Halloween. And I don’t mean the organic, gluten-free, non-GMO, no artificial colors or flavoring, good for you“treats.” I’m talking about chocolate, caramel bars, gummies, and sour balls. How Creating Balance in Your Gut Can Help Alleviate Anxiety
Most of us are pretty familiar with how anxiety feels in our body. When you have anxious thoughts, your body responds with a tightening in the stomach, nausea, gas, heartburn, and indigestion. The connection between your brain and your gastrointestinal tract goes the other way as well. If your digestive system is disrupted, it can send signals to your brain that may cause you to become anxious. This bidirectional connection is called the gut-brain axis. We are still learning a lot about the digestive system’s effect on the body and the mind, but what is coming to light through scientific research is that your gut is tru...

The Future Of Hearing: How Technology Might Turn Us Into Superheroes
The objective of medical tools for personal use started to go beyond measuring health parameters and vital signs, offering accurate, as well as easy and patient-friendly measurements. Lately, they are also coupled with aesthetic appearance. Elements of design thinking and UX become an ever more organic part of product development – and that’s also visible when looking at hearables. The trend also allows getting rid of societal stigmas bound with medical devices. Millions of people don’t want to wear hearing aids because it’s connected to aging and is perceived as being more dependent while signaling that the bod...

Herbert Kleber
Jeffrey A. SingerToday ’sGoogle Doodle is about Dr. Herbert Kleber, a noted U.S. psychiatrist who died on October 5, 2018. After his early work with addicted inmates at a national prison in Kentucky, he became very disappointed with the results of what was, in effect, abstinence therapy augmented by work assignments and group therapy sessions —which had been the standard approach in the 1960s. This approach was associated with a roughly 90 percent failure rate. His research at Yale and later at Columbia University was largely responsible for the now widespread acceptance of methadone, and now other forms of what is refe...

How To Overcome Work Stress with Resilience Tactics
You're reading How To Overcome Work Stress with Resilience Tactics, originally posted on Pick the Brain | Motivation and Self Improvement. If you're enjoying this, please visit our site for more inspirational articles. Stress is good.  You won’t hear that on most productivity blogs. We’re usually obsessed with finding ways to decrease our level of stress. Buy a stress ball! Do some yoga! Get one of those kettles with the long spout and chant an ancient hymn while pouring organic coffee!  But since we’re both here, it seems likely that neither of us are totally satisfied with that kind of advice. T...

The Stress of Choosing the “Right” Food
Does trying to choose the "right" food stress you out? In our information-saturated landscape, choosing what to eat has become more and more complicated.  Food stress is the pressure of making the right choice often makes us self-limit choices.  We avoid buying this food because a television doctor said it is terrible for us.  We choose to eat only certain foods because a celebrity lost weight doing that.  Or we stand in the grocery aisle wondering if we’ll be judged by our family, friends, or community because we don’t buy something with the “right” label.Eating well shoul...

What underlies the documented increase in autism incidence? Results of a new study
Studies from the Center for Disease Control and elsewhere have compellingly documented a rapid increase in the incidence of autism in the United States. WHAT THE HELL IS CAUSING IT? Given the enormous human and societal costs of this malady, few practical scientific questions are more important to we Americans, in our current era. Whether a single or multiple factors, the cause(s) of an increased incidence of autism has to meet three obvious criteria: It has to be widely dispersed in our environment — because autism rate increases are EVERYWHERE, at least in the United States. It must be steadily increasing in its c...

Dr. Epstein, Political Bias, & Google Search Results
I’m a little confused by claims made by Dr. Robert Epstein and his assertion, based upon a single study of 95 participants, that Google somehow intentionally biased the results shown before the 2016 U.S. presidential election. And therefore, likely impacted the election results itself. That’s a huge assertion to make. One would hope that an esteemed researcher such as Dr. Epstein would have the scientific data to back it up. Unfortunately, I don’t see it. Science is only objective up until the point where a scientist acknowledges and accounts for her or his own biases. Science is not based on a preset ag...
