The Return of Reefer Madness
Alex Berenson ’s recent attempt to generate panic at the prospect that marijuana use may become legalized and normalized, with his book Tell Your Children: The Truth About Marijuana, Mental Illness, and Violence,  even borrows its title from the camp 1930s propaganda film  Reefer Madness.  While not nearly as over-the-top as the film, Berenson certainly exaggerates suggestions that marijuana can cause psychosis.Drawing on the 2017 report of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on “Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids: The Current State of Evidence and Recommendations for Research,” h...

The NextMove Patent Reaction Dataset
ConclusionOrganic synthesis underpins much of modern society. As such, it's hard to overstate the utility of an open, machine-readable, freely-reusable, annotated reaction corpus as large and complete as the NextMove reaction dataset. The theoretical and practical applications that have already appeared hint at some of the things that are now possible. (Source: Depth-First)

The (Dis)Comfort Zone
I realized recently that I rarely stray outside my comfort zone. It takes such an effort for me to keep going to classes, for example, or anything at night. Parties on weekends are a supreme effort at times, though I’m usually glad I went. But why is there such an effort behind going out, forward? Anxiety runs in my family, I believe all of us but Ned suffer from it. Mine comes in waves, where the terrible times make me feel like old wood, about to crack and splinter. I think Nat’s is like this, too. When he was a baby and had some new food in front of him, he said, “Don’t worry hot dogs.” Try...

Olive Oil and Garlic for Ear Infection Pain
In this study of about 100 children, the herbal drops worked as well as the prescription drops. This is great news, except the study is from July 2001 and Otikon Otic Solution is no longer available, or at least not in the United States. From my perspective, eardrops of some type should play a large role in the management of ear infections. My favorite would be to use garlic oil for ear infections, in a potent high-quality extra virgin olive oil as a base. They would include mullein and other key organic and wild foraged herbs. Many ear infections can be safely managed without antibiotics if children are given pa...

From Tribal Fusion Bellydance to Tolstoy
I’ve always been fascinated by extreme opposites working together at the same time. I love the way classical, orderly Enlightenment Europe morphed into its opposite, stormy, histrionic Romanticism. In philosophy, music, poetry, and painting. Late eighteenth century rationalism caves into moody sturm und drang of the early nineteenth century. The symmetry of Mozart into the surprises of Beethoven. Voltaire, Rousseau and then Hegel to Marx. Whew. That was a long time ago, in history and in my life. I thought those interests of mine had gone underground in the last few decades of my life, disappearing into autism advoca...

What makes a cosmetic chemist – Episode 168
Beauty Science News What makes a cosmetic chemist? Here’s a story published in the Insider back in November talking about the Luxury skin-care brand Sunday Riley and whether their founder is actually a cosmetic chemist. But what makes someone a cosmetic chemist? Nearly all cosmetic chemists working in the mainstream cosmetic industry have a college degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical or maybe Biology. Most people have Bachelor’s degrees but more and more people are getting Masters degrees from places like the University of Cincinnati. Alright, so there is the education piece b...

Feast on fats
One of the most common mistakes people make when starting out on the Wheat Belly lifestyle is to remain fearful of fats. They continue to hold onto old misconceptions such as “fats raise cholesterol,” or “fat causes heart disease,” or “fats are calorie-dense and therefore make you fat.” None of this is true, no more true than “healthy whole grains” are a key to overall health. (The rationale dashing all these misconceptions is discussed in detail in Wheat Belly Total Health.) This accounts for why some people, even after removing the gliadin-derived opiates that come from wheat and related grains, continue...

Stop shoving metrics down nurses ’ throats
One time, I applied for an emergency department (ED) nurse manager position. I thought I had the job locked up until I was asked during the interview how I would “enforce metrics.” “Enforce.” My holistic, qualitative research-based response to this authoritarian-style question was: “I’ll find more organic ways to achieve your metrics without shoving numbers […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more. Hold onto your hats . . .
In about 2 billion years the Large Magellanic Cloud will collide with our galaxy. It ' s not actually a cloud, of course. It was named before people had powerful telescopes and could figure out that many of the so-called nebulae were actually galaxies. The LMC is a satellite of our galaxy, which we call the Milky Way. We have many such satellites but the LMC is the biggest. The collision will result in an influx of material into Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the center of the galaxy, " waking up " the Milky Way to become an active galaxy, with powerful jets of high energy radiation emitted from the poles of A*. This won...
