Lobectomy Fluid Management
Seeking comments and advice from those of you much wiser and more experienced than than I am. (All of you)
Question about intraoperative fluid management in this theoretical case:
Morbidly obese 67 yo F 5'2" 137kg with COPD and history of delayed emergence presents for right VATS upper lobectomy. Case goes for 8hrs induction to emergence (no conversion to thoracotomy). Difficult DLT placement takes 20 minutes of tweaking to sit right. Ultimately complicated by ~1200ml blood loss, lowest...

Bias towards attractive / beautiful people in derm?
I've been looking at the web pages of derm residency programs, and it seems like the overwhelming majority of the residents are attractive females. Many are downright smoke shows. I'm a bit stunned, honestly. The dudes are more variable in the facial aesthetics department, but it seems like they're all at least lean / not overweight. Low GPA, High MCAT- DO Schools
Hello! I am a non-traditional student hoping to apply to DO schools in 2018. I have a masters in Clinical Psychology and was able to provide therapy for a year. I am wondering not only what are my chances, but also what schools would be good to look at. My stats are:
-sGPA- 3.25-3.3
-cGPA- 3.45
-MCAT 515 (balanced)
-Work full time as a medical scribe (1 year)
-Volunteer at a nursing home (50 hours)
-Research (50 hours working on an obesity study)
-Lived abroad for 1 year teaching English...

Reconciling obesity Guidelines
There are a few guidelines for determining obesity, so what do you do when they directly contradict each other?
I've heard the "reliable" sources tell me that BMI and waistline are reliable indicators.
So what do I do when a patient comes to me with a 24 BMI and a 40" waist? He doesn't show any sort of severe abdominal obesity or anything. His BMI says "normal," but his waistline meets the guideline for obese. I ask this in particular because I and one of my friends both have these same...

Why are males expected to take their shirts off during OMM?
I mean it's almost like they don't even ask, they just expect you to take your shirt. In some cases instructors even told us to take them off to "feel the fascia". I'm usually sweating excessively, I'm overweight and I don't feel comfortable standing all sweaty with upper part of the body naked in front of the class of non sweaty people. Besides, my partner would probably wish that I left my shirt on after touching my sweaty oily skin. I think it would be best for everyone to let males...
