Dysregulation of the immune system and host-microbiota interaction has been associated with the development of a variety of inflammatory as well as metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Recent studies in Dr. Flavell's laboratory have elucidated the important function of inflammasomes as steady-state sensors and regulators of the gut microbiota. Mice with a disrupted inflammasome pathway have been shown to develop a colitogenic microbial community, which results in exacerbation of chemical-induced colitis and diet-induced steatohepatitis, obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The DGAC Report submitted to the Secretaries of Health and Human Services and of Agriculture, will provide the scientific basis for the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans policy document developed by the Federal government with consideration of public comments.

In celebration of American Heart Month, learn steps you can take toward heart-healthy eating. Ms. Kathryn McMurry, M.S., with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), will present "Make the DASH to Heart Health" based on NIH-funded research.
Ms. McMurry is the Nutrition Coordinator at NHLBI and leads their efforts to promote greater communication regarding all nutrition-related activities and represents the NHLBI on internal and external nutrition committees such as the NIH Nutrition Coordinating Committee and the Dietary Guidelines Alliance.

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) and Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) are convening an expert panel to identify research needs related to the safe use of high intakes of folic acid based on consideration of the state of the science. The expert panel meeting will bring together experts from multiple disciplines including, but not limited to, epidemiology, nutrition, medicine, and toxicology.
