Patient acceptability of intravitreal complement inhibitors in geographic atrophy (GA): protocol for a UK-based cross-sectional study
Introduction Geographic atrophy (GA) is the advanced form of the non-neovascular (‘dry’) type of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Previously untreatable, complement inhibitors delivered by regular intravitreal injections have recently been demonstrated to slow down the progression of GA lesions in phase 3 trials. One such treatment, Syfovre (pegcetacoplan), was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in February 2023. These therapies slow down, but do not stop or reverse, the progression of GA; they may also increase the risk of developing the neovascular (‘wet’) type of AMD. In light...

Real-time monitoring and feedback to improve shared decision-making for surgery (the ALPACA Study): protocol for a mixed-methods study to inform co-development of an inclusive intervention
Introduction High-quality shared decision-making (SDM) is a priority of health services, but only achieved in a minority of surgical consultations. Improving SDM for surgical patients may lead to more effective care and moderate the impact of treatment consequences. There is a need to establish effective ways to achieve sustained and large-scale improvements in SDM for all patients whatever their background. The ALPACA Study aims to develop, pilot and evaluate a decision support intervention that uses real-time feedback of patients’ experience of SDM to change patients’ and healthcare professionals’ decis...

Correlation between intrapartum CTG findings and interleukin-6 levels in the umbilical cord arterial blood: A prospective cohort study
Cardiotocography (CTG) was introduced into clinical practice to permit the timely recognition of an ongoing intrapartum hypoxic stress, so that appropriate actions could be taken to avoid hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) or perinatal deaths [1 –3]. However, intrapartum hypoxic injuries are not the only cause of adverse perinatal outcomes [4–6]. There are several “non-hypoxic” pathways such as inflammation which can also contribute to fetal compromise and resultant poor perinatal outcomes. The Early Notification Scheme Progress Rep ort of the National Health Service (NHS) Resolution found that among the neonate...

Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of online recorded recovery narratives in improving quality of life for people with non-psychotic mental health problems: a pragmatic randomized controlled trial
World Psychiatry. 2024 Feb;23(1):101-112. doi: 10.1002/wps.21176.ABSTRACTNarratives describing first-hand experiences of recovery from mental health problems are widely available. Emerging evidence suggests that engaging with mental health recovery narratives can benefit people experiencing mental health problems, but no randomized controlled trial has been conducted as yet. We developed the Narrative Experiences Online (NEON) Intervention, a web application providing self-guided and recommender systems access to a collection of recorded mental health recovery narratives (n=659). We investigated whether NEON Intervention a...
