What is a 'National' 'Health' 'Service'? A keyword analysis of policy documents leading to the formation of the UK NHS
Health Econ Policy Law. 2024 Mar 18:1-14. doi: 10.1017/S1744133124000057. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis paper explores the keywords of 'National', 'Health' and Service' in the road to the NHS in 1948. It uses a form of Qualitative Content Analysis to analyse key documents in the period leading to the 'Appointed Day' when the NHS was created in 1948. In terms of 'national', most documents favoured Local Authorities, with 'National' coming rather late in the day. For 'health', most of the documents 'talk' of a broad or 'positive' health, but they lack any specific details, and seem to focus on a narrower curative medica...

"Quite simply they dont communicate": a case study of a National Health Service response to staff suicide
This study aimed to explore and understand the communication processes around staff suicide across a National Health Service (NHS) Trust and to provide recommendations based on these findings. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 29 participants, each lasting approximately 90 min. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) guidelines were followed. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data, resulting in seven themes being identified based on communication. Findings indicated that the Trust had no clear communication strategy in place for tackling staff suicide. Each suicide was hand...

Use of anticoagulants to improve pregnancy outcomes in couples positive for M2 haplotype: A systematic review
Placenta mediated pregnancy complications (PMPC) include implantation failure, recurrent or late pregnancy loss, pre-eclampsia, placental abruption, fetal growth restriction and premature birth. PMPC represent a significant cause of physical, psychological and emotional morbidity, fetal loss, and maternal and neonatal mortality [1,11,23,35,36,54]. Pregnancy loss alone costs the National Health Service in the United Kingdom more than £400 million per year, highlighting the additional economic burden on health systems from PMPC [38]. Quarter-million genomes analyzed in NIH project could be ‘hugely important’ for identifying disease risks
A giant research database with genetic and health data of people across the United States has hit its stride. Today, the All of Us study published an analysis of genomes and linked health information from nearly 250,000 participants whose diversity may be greater than that in any comparable biobank widely available for research. The National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded effort, which plans to quadruple that genome number ultimately, has already found hundreds of millions of never-reported genetic variants that have the potential to reveal new links between genes, health, and disease. “This is a hugely im...

Anticipatory declarations for vaccination of the newborn
Earlier this year, a National Health Service Trust applied for anticipatory declarations relating to an unborn child.1 C was 37 weeks pregnant, HIV positive for over 20 years and had refused antiretroviral treatment during this pregnancy. The obstetricians were concerned that the newborn could be HIV positive. C was due to have elective caesarean section the following day. The application intended to secure the court’s authority to administer antiretroviral treatment to the newborn baby within 4 hours of birth and for 28 days thereafter. Justice Hayden was told that C had only once received antiretroviral therapy; in...

Mental health interventions in Italian prisons: are we ready for a new model? Suggestions from the Parma experience
Riv Psichiatr. 2024 Jan-Feb;59(1):35-42. doi: 10.1708/4205.41947.ABSTRACTMental health interventions for Italian prisoners with mental disorder remain a problematic issue, despite radical changes in psychiatric care and a 2008 major government reform transferring mental health care in prison to the National Health Service. Indeed, prison has increasingly become a place of severe psychological distress, where also serious mental illnesses sometimes occur. In this contribution, we commented on the recommendations recently proposed by the Emilia-Romagna Region on how structuring mental healthcare interventions in all regional...
