2023 Stephen E. Straus Lecture: Novel Insights Into Heart-Brain Interactions and Neurobiological Resilience
Ahmed Tawakol, M.D., Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, will deliver the 2023 Stephen E. Straus Distinguished Lecture in the Science of Complementary Therapies. In his talk, Dr. Tawakol will review how neural pathways related to stress and depression result in cardiovascular diseases. Many studies have shown that stress and depression are associated with heightened amygdalar activity relative to regulatory activity in the cortex. Multisystem research has shown that increased stress-neural network activity triggers sympathetic system activity and induces leukopoiesis, resulting in systemic inflammati...

Chemotactile receptors in suckers of octopus help them explore surroundings
Chemotactile receptors in the suckers of octopus allow the animals to methodically explore their surroundings using "taste by touch." Researchers traced the evolutionary adaptations in the sensing capabilities of octopus and squid, revealing evolutionary links to human brain receptors. WALS Lecture: Richard Tsien, Ph.D.
As a physiologist/neurobiologist, I have long been fascinated by calcium channels. These membrane proteins regulate cellular Ca2+ entry in a voltage-dependent manner and thereby link the realms of electrical signaling and intracellular messengers. A single opening of a Ca2+ channel can allow thousands of calcium ions to enter a cell, thus generating a signal that may control transmitter release, excitability, metabolism, or gene expression. My colleagues and I have been active in discovering and classifying diverse types of Ca2+ channels, including the channels most critical for neurosecretion in the brain. By uncovering N...
