The future of robotics: in a transhuman world, the disabled will be the ones without prosthetic limbs
Bertolt Meyer's amazing bionic hand controlled by an iPhone app is a glimpse of the advances being made in prosthetics. But in years to come, will everyone want one?Bertolt Meyer is used to being viewed as not fully human. Born with a stump where his left hand should have been, he spent his childhood wearing a hook connected to an elaborate pulley and harness. "To open the hook and grasp things I had to flex my shoulders like this," he says, striking a he-man pose. "The harness was very uncomfortable. To stop it chafing my skin, I had to wear a shirt underneath it at all times. I was always sweating."Even when, at the age ...

Some Ideas for Handling Treatment-Resistant Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is being better understood each day. There is also ongoing research into its treatment. But successfully treating bipolar disorder can involve several medication trials, and it can take years to achieve remission. Even if remission is attained, recurrence is the rule — not the exception. It’s not uncommon for all first-line treatments to be exhausted. People in this situation may be considered by mental health professionals to be treatment-resistant. Trends in on-label and off-label modafinil use in USA
Source: JAMA Area: News JAMA Internal Medicine has featured a research letter describing the "off-label" use of modafinil in the US. Using the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, a nationally representative sample of ambulatory visits were evaluated ( January 1, 2002, to December 31, 2009) to determine the extent of modafinil use, and to categorise patients by whether or not they had an on-label indication for modafinil, defining off-label use as the absence of an on-label diagnosis. Additionally, the association between modafinil use and other centrally acting medications that might interact with modafinil such as a...
