A few things you can do
Voluntary action is not going to solve the planetary environmental crisis. We need a massive public policy response including public investment, regulatory and tax policy. So please don ' t think that any of your individual small acts of virtue mean you can stop being politically engaged. Still, we might as well do what little we can, in part because their can be multiplicative and synergistic effects. I ' m going to point to a few things that basically won ' t cost you a penny, or inconvenience you, or make you give up anything you like. There are a lot of more sustainable food products becoming available. Obviously, you c...

Big Dairy Milks Congress for Baby Formula Tariffs
Gabriella Beaumont-SmithJanuary 11th isNational Milk Day and this year, the U.S. dairy industry has a  lot to celebrate. While the 2022 baby formula crisis grappled the United States, the National Milk Producers Federation called on Congress toresistnew action. In November, the groupurged Congress to oppose any efforts to extend the tariff suspensions emergently granted to baby formula imports amidst the crisis. Unsurprisingly, Big Dairy succeeded —on January 1st, thetariffs returned on imports of infant formula meaning these imports are again subject to an effective tax of about 25 percent. To recap, the baby formula cri...

If you feel your milk supply is low, here are five suggestions on how to increase it: Take care of yourself. Eat well and drink plenty of fluids. During nursing, try not to diet. You are still establishing your supply and need a minimum of 1800 calories each day while you are lactating. Fun fact: if you eat high quality foods and limit fats and sweets, you will usually lose weight more easily than a mother who is formula feeding.  Nurse frequently. Goug ères
Gougères. The perfect appetizer for the holidays. So impressive, so fancy, so French. And yet, they are so easy to make. Even better, they can be made ahead and frozen, then simply reheated in the oven when your guests arrive, as they are best served warm. Gougere are simply a savory cream puff. I first learned to make cream puffs in college, when I spent my summers in the dessert kitchen of a sleep away camp in New Hampshire. My boss, whose late husband had been a French-trained chef, brought his recipes into the camp kitchen and ran the place like it was the French Laundry. She taught me how NOT to put the knives...

Enlightened Cream of Tomato Soup
Warning – The story behind this soup is a long one. A melodrama in three acts as it were. Act I It all started with a chicken that I purchased some weeks ago, in order to get a single chicken liver to use in a Bolognese ragu. After removing the liver from the little packet stuffed inside the chicken, I put the neck back in the cavity, put the chicken in the freezer and made the Bolognese. Act II Two weeks later, I took the chicken out of the freezer, put it in a pot with some veggies and water and cooked it, giving me a meat to make soft tacos for the a couple of dinners and lunches. And also a gorgeous...

Scientists Studying Health – “ Evidence Based Medicine ”
When someone new comes to healthcare, it’s always amazing to see how many things they think happen that just don’t. For patients, that’s the realization that doctors often don’t collaborate together on their care and they often don’t share information. That’s on the patient and their caregiver to ensure the records get where they need to go and care is coordinated. If you think that’s an exaggeration, check out two of the three apps I featured here to see how big of a problem this is for rare disease patients. There are a lot more. Jay Parkinson, MD shared one he discovered when he...
