2024 Kuan-Teh Jeang Memorial Lecture: The broad impact of innate immune receptors in viral infection, cancer and autoimmunity
Jenny Pan-Yun Ting is a Taiwanese-American immunologist and microbiologist at University of North Carolina. She is a highly cited researcher who studies the role of NLR genes in regulating inflammation and how nanoparticles and microparticles can be used as vaccine adjuvants. In memory of Kuan-Teh Jeang, the lecture will discuss the roles of multiple innate immune receptors in viral infection in mouse models and patients. The seminar will also describe the unexpected intrinsic roles of these receptors in adaptive T and B lymphocytes. The latter adects both cancer and autoimmunity, with implications for immunotherapeutics.I...

NIH FDA COVID-19 SIG: Metabolic causes and consequences of post-viral syndromes
Maayan Levy, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Microbiology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Her research investigates the fascinating question of how metabolites derived from diet and from the microbiome play a pivotal role in regulating various aspects of host physiology. Moreover, she explores the potential therapeutic applications of these metabolites. Maayan completed her doctoral training at the Weizmann Institute of Science. During her PhD studies, she focused on crucial questions concerning the stability of the intestinal microbiome and made significant discoveries related to microbio...

WALS: The World of Insect-Bacterial Symbiosis: What we have and have not learned
Nancy Moran, Ph.D., is the Raymer Chair and professor of integrative biology at the University of Texas at Austin. She earned her B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin in biology in 1976, and then moved to the University of Michigan to earn her Ph.D. in zoology in 1982. She has served on the faculty at the University of Arizona (1986-2010), Yale University (2010-2013) and UT Austin (2013-present). Moran ’ s research has long focused on symbiotic bacteria that live in insects, especially on their evolutionary histories, genomics and biological functions in hosts. Her recent research projects have involved symbiosis ...

Sleuthing the Microbiome Reveals Undercover Agents of Oncogenesis
The annual Astute Clinician Lecture was established in 1998 through a gift from the late Dr. Robert W. Miller and his wife, Haruko. It honors U.S. scientists who have observed unusual clinical occurrences and, by investigating them, have opened an important new avenue of research. The lectureship exemplifies how astute clinical observations can lead to innovative research. Speakers are proposed by members of the Medical Executive Committee (MEC) with voting for the top three candidates. Selection from this slate of candidates is made by the NIH Director. An expert in foodborne and intestinal infections, Cynthia Sears is ...
