The Removal of Total Knee Arthroplasty From the Inpatient-Only List has Improved Patient Optimization
CONCLUSION: Outpatient TKA has increased considerably post-IPO removal. As this regulatory change has allowed older patients with increased comorbidities to undergo oTKA, the need for appropriate preoperative optimization has increased. The current data set demonstrates that surgeons have improved preoperative optimization efforts for select modifiable risk factors.PMID:38684134 | DOI:10.5435/JAAOS-D-22-01132 (Source: The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons)

The Role of Delirium on Short- and Long-Term Postoperative Outcomes Following Major Gastrointestinal Surgery for Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative delirium occurred in one in 50 patients undergoing surgical resection of a digestive tract cancer. Delirium was linked to a reduced likelihood of achieving an optimal postoperative outcome, increased ICU utilization, higher expenditures, and a worse long-term prognosis. Initiatives to prevent delirium are vital to improve postoperative outcomes among cancer surgery patients.PMID:38683304 | DOI:10.1245/s10434-024-15358-x (Source: Ann Oncol)

Comparison of Comorbidity Models Within a Population-Based Cohort of Older Adults With Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
CONCLUSION: The optimal measure of comorbidity in NHL is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that the three-category TRES and five-category NHL-5 scores perform as well as the 14-16 category CCI and NCI scores in terms of association with OS and lymphoma-specific survival. These simple scores could be more easily used in clinical practice without prognostic loss.PMID:38684043 | DOI:10.1200/CCI.23.00223 (Source: Clinical Lymphoma and Myeloma)

Surgical versus Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement in Low Risk Medicare Beneficiaries
Recent approval of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in patients at low surgical risk has resulted in a rapid real-world expansion of TAVR in patients not otherwise examined in recent low-risk trials. We sought to evaluate the outcomes of surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) vs TAVR in low-risk Medicare beneficiaries. (Source: The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)
