Men’s virility… much more than low-T
A low level of testosterone (“low-T”) is a huge problem for my older male patients… and it goes far beyond a decline in sexual drive. How low-T affects your health… Low-T associated with aging also causes decreased muscle mass and bone density, reduced insulin resistance and energy, and even depression. But going to a “low-T” clinic is not going to help you. These places are often fly-by-night operations that hand out “prescriptions” for testosterone that are rubber stamped by doctors who don’t even see the men coming into the clinics. Even worse, they don’t understand the testosterone protocol you M...

Ask JJ: Healthier Halloween Candy?
Dear JJ: I have a coworker who, during the holiday season, puts "healthier" versions of sweets in the office break room. Determined they are guilt-free (or at least better), I sometimes grab a few bites that inevitably become more than a few bites. What's my best option to navigate potentially dietary derailments during the inevitable holiday crapfest? Every October, blogs surface by health-minded, well-intended writers showing how you can tweak Halloween candy. Typically these "healthier" versions are lower in calories and fat. But are they really healthier? Not necessarily, at least from a sugar-impact standpoint. Let'...

The type of fat you eat matters!
By: JoAnn E. Manson, MD, DrPH, and Shari S. Bassuk, ScD Contributing Editors, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School If you saw last month’s news headlines declaring that saturated fat is no longer deemed harmful to your heart, you may be (understandably!) confused. After all, for years, clinicians and scientists have recommended reducing saturated fat for heart health. Is it time to rethink this advice? Hardly. Here’s the deal. The research that sparked the recent news splash was an analysis by Canadian researchers of up to a dozen long-term observational studies of diet that included a total of 90,000...

Ask JJ: Low-Carb Diets
Dear JJ: I lost nearly 60 pounds on a low-carb diet. I felt and looked great. My doctor raved about my improved blood work. Unfortunately, I eventually gained it back plus some, and I've known other low-carb dieters who met the same fate. Why do so many people struggle with low-carb diets even though we know they work? If I put you on a desert island for a few months with just protein, dietary fat, and water, you'd be fine because your body can actually make glucose on its own. In other words, you can live fine without carbohydrates. The thing is, who wants to live like that? Not me. Low-carb diets have their benefits....

Low-fat diet 'better' than low-carb diet for getting rid of body fat
Conclusion This well-designed diet lab study showed that a six-day low-carbohydrate diet affects a person's metabolism far more than a low-fat diet. The low-carb diet led to more fat burning and overall energy expenditure via lower insulin levels, whereas the low-fat diet didn't alter fat or carb-burning proportions, but led to more fat loss. The study was well designed and rigorous, but included only 19 people and lasted only a few weeks. This is a small number of people, and a short amount of time, on which to base any generalisations about most people. The results aren't convincing enough to settle the low-carb versus ...

For fat loss, low-fat diets beat low-carb diets handily, new research finds
It is a central dogma of the low-carb lifestyle: that while avoiding carbohydrates will force the human body into fat-burning mode, any diet that fails to suppress insulin will trap body fat in place and thwart a dieter's hope of shifting to a leaner, healthier body type. Claims that 'butter is safe' and 'margarine deadly' are simplistic
ConclusionThis careful systematic review and meta-analysis of research into the effects of saturated and trans fat on health found no evidence that eating more saturated fat raises the risk of death from any cause, death from cardiovascular disease, or risk of getting heart disease, stroke, or type 2 diabetes. However, the authors say they can only have "very low" confidence in their findings, because of the methodological limitations of the individual studies that contributed data. The study did find a link between eating more trans fats and death from any cause, from heart disease or risk of getting heart diseas...

Don't Define Your Diet by What You're NOT Eating
Article Source: makeyourbodywork.com Imagine attending a party where you really don't know anyone. Eager to strike up conversation, you introduce yourself to a woman and ask here what she does for a living. "I'm not a lawyer," she responds. "What just happened?" you ask yourself. Was your question confusing? Or maybe you misheard her answer? Either way, that conversation ended awkwardly. Now picture this: Your colleague comes back from vacation with a great-looking tan. Obviously he's been traveling someplace warm so you ask, "Hey -- where did you vacation to?" He answers, "We didn't make it to Florida this year." Ag...
