Numeracy skills learning of children in Africa: —Are disabled children lagging behind?
This study provides empirical evidence on the within- and across-country variation in numeracy skills performance among children based on nationally representative data from eight African countries (DR Congo, The Gambia, Ghana, Lesotho, Sierra Leone, Togo, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe). We assess whether and to what extent children with disabilities lag in numeracy skills and how much it depends on their type of disabilities. More specifically, we explore whether disabled children benefit equally from better school system quality. The assessment is analysed as a natural experiment using the performance of non-disabled children as...

Awareness and control measures for gastrointestinal parasites in donkeys in Maseru district, Lesotho
This study was conducted to evaluate donkey owners' knowledge and control measures on prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites (GIPs) in three agro-ecological zones (AEZs) of Maseru district. A total of 144 donkey owners were selected for individual interviews through a stratified random sampling. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used to analyze data. The significance (p <0.05) of different AEZs was tested using a post-hoc cell-wise adjusted standardized residual analysis. Majority of donkey owners were familiar with the GIPs especially nematodes as it seemed to be the most occurring, but there was no si...

The prevalence of emotional abuse in children living in Sub-Saharan Africa - A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: In general countries displayed a high prevalence. A standardized use of a uniform definition of emotional abuse might help to display a more homogenous data set in the future, giving the opportunity for pooled estimates of prevalence.PMID:37004459 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2023.106155 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Modelling the impact of CD4 testing on mortality from TB and cryptococcal meningitis among patients with advanced HIV disease in nine countries
CONCLUSIONS: This analysis supports retaining baseline CD4 testing to avert deaths from TB and CM, the two most deadly opportunistic infections among patients with AHD. However, national programmes will need to weigh the cost of increasing CD4 access against other HIV-related priorities and allocate resources accordingly.PMID:36880429 | PMC:PMC9989935 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26070 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)

The impact of COVID-19 and national pandemic responses on health service utilisation in seven low- and middle-income countries
CONCLUSIONS: Context-specific strategies show the ability of health systems to sustain essential health services during the pandemic. The link between pandemic responses and healthcare utilisation can inform purposeful strategies to ensure communities have access to care and provide lessons for promoting the utilisation of health services elsewhere.PMID:36880985 | DOI:10.1080/16549716.2023.2178604 (Source: Global Health Action)
