Timely delivery of PORT for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in a county hospital
CONCLUSION: Early referrals, frequent communication, and use of a secure registry were the key to the success found by our group despite the socioeconomic challenges of our underserved, safety-net hospital patient population. The changes made at our institution should serve as a template for other institutions seeking to improve the quality of care for their HNSCC patients.PMID:38362185 | PMC:PMC10866599 | DOI:10.1002/lio2.1211 (Source: Cancer Control)

Primary lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma of the larynx mimicking extramedullary plasmacytoma: A case report
Oncol Lett. 2024 Jan 30;27(3):132. doi: 10.3892/ol.2024.14265. eCollection 2024 Mar.ABSTRACTPrimary haematological neoplasms of the larynx are uncommon; therefore, information regarding their epidemiology is limited and the diagnosis of histological types requires careful consideration. The current study describes the case of a 72-year-old male patient with primary laryngeal lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma (LPL) that was difficult to distinguish from plasmacytoma. Imaging examinations of the neck revealed a mass in the right laryngeal folds, 25×12×25 mm in size, which was surgically resected by direct laryngoscopy. Histopatho...

Impact of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux in Patients with Voice Disorders
ConclusionLaryngopharyngeal reflux disease has to be considered in patients presenting with hoarseness of voice for more than three weeks. Simple and highly reproducible scores like Reflux Symptom Index and Reflux Finding Score proven useful and valuable tools in diagnosing LPRD thereby aiding in early diagnosis and prompt management and improves the patient ’s quality of life.Level of EvidenceLevel 1. First-Attempt Success Between Anatomically and Physiologically Difficult Airways in the National Emergency Airway Registry
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to no difficult airway characteristics, ADAs were inversely associated with first-attempt success, while PDAs were not. Both ADAs and PDAs, as well as their interaction, were inversely associated with first-attempt success without adverse events.PMID:38335138 | DOI:10.1213/ANE.0000000000006828 (Source: Anesthesia and Analgesia)

A Large Adult Postcricoid Lymphatic Malformation: A Case Report and Literature Review
In this study, we presented a 36-year-old female presented with globus sensation, dysphagia, and upper airway obstruction, requiring a tracheostomy. A computed tomography scan identified a 5 cm × 4.5 cm × 3 cm multilocular hypodense lesion in the postcricoid. Due to its considerable size, complete resection with function preservation was crucial, and a standard microscopic direct laryngoscopy approach may result in inadequate exposure, while an open transcervical approach may affect functional outcomes and increase surgical complications. We successfully performed an en bloc resection with a transoral endoscopic approach...

Serendipity in oto-rhino-laryngology
This article reviews eight serendipitous findings in oto-rhino-laryngology important to its advancement.MethodThe following serendipitous findings are discussed: the accidental discovery of the laryngeal mirror and indirect laryngoscopy by Garcia (1854), the invention of direct oesophagoscopy by Ku ßmaul (circa 1868), Czermák’s (1863) development of diaphanoscopy, the unintentional emergence of bronchography from a clinical error made by Weingartner (1914), adenotomy by Meyer (1869), the discovery of the causes of unbalance related to the vestibular nerve by Flourens (1830), Bárány’s ( 1914) finding that the semi-c...

Should Video Laryngoscopy Replace Direct Laryngoscopy as a Primary Intubation Technique?
AbstractPurpose of ReviewWhile direct laryngoscopy has been the standard technique for tracheal intubation, the application of video laryngoscopy has grown over the past two decades. Early evidence established its beneficial role over direct laryngoscopy for difficult intubations.Recent FindingsSummative evidence indicates that video laryngoscopy is superior to direct laryngoscopy for more generalized populations in the operating room. Prior research has questioned the role of video laryngoscopy for tracheal intubation outside of the operating room in emergent situations. More recent evidence has now established video lary...

Diagnostic Delay in HPV-Related Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Conclusions Compared with non-HPV related OPSCC, the unique clinical presentation and characteristics of HPV+ OPSCC are associated with an increased incidence of diagnostic delay. Targeted education of appropriate care providers may improve time to diagnosis and treatment. [...] Thieme Revinter Publicações Ltda.
