Dynamic versus standard bougies for tracheal intubation with direct or indirect laryngoscopy in simulated or real scenarios: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Dynamic bougies do not increase the overall first-pass success rate or shorten tracheal intubation time. However, dynamic bougies seem to improve first-attempt tracheal intubation rate in patients with difficult airways and in those intubated with a Macintosh blade. Further research is needed for definitive conclusions.REGISTRATION OF PROSPERO: CRD42023472122.PMID:38655581 | DOI:10.1080/17434440.2024.2344667 (Source: Expert Review of Medical Devices)

Determinants of difficult laryngoscopy based on upper airway indicators: a prospective observational study
The main cause of anesthesia-related deaths is the failure to manage difficult airways. Difficult laryngoscopic exposure is a major cause of unsuccessful management of difficult airways. Inadequate preoperativ... (Source: BMC Anesthesiology)

Poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma originating in the subglottic larynx: A case report with imm unohistochemical study
Laryngoscopic images showing a red mass in the sub glottis (black arrow). Key Clinical MessageLaryngeal neuroendocrine carcinomas are the most common non-squamous neoplasm of the larynx. Due to the rarity of the tumor, pathological diagnosis should be confirmed by immunohistochemistry.AbstractLaryngeal neuroendocrine carcinomas (LNECs) are a rare cancer of the head and neck. Few case reports of poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma originating in the subglottic larynx exist within the literature. In this case, we discuss a 57-year-old patient with a history of four-month hoarseness with a newly diagnosed of poorly...

Laryngeal surface reconstructions from monocular endoscopic videos: a structure from motion pipeline for periodic deformations
ConclusionThe pre-filtering and featureless dense matching modules specialize the conventional SfM pipeline to handle the challenging laryngoscopic examinations, directly from patient videos. These 3D visualizations have the potential to improve spatial understanding of airway conditions. (Source: International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery)

Unusual Case of Esophageal Foreign Body: A Whole Mantis Shrimp
This article presents an extremely rare case of an esophageal FB, where a 44-year-old man accidentally ingested an entire mantis shrimp while sucking its flavored tail, and was sent to the emergency department for severe throat pain and difficulty breathing. We immediately performed a laryngoscopy that revealed the FB that obstructs the entrance of the esophagus, obstructing the glottis due to the long shape of the shrimp. The mantis shrimp had barbs on its shell and trying to remove it intact would cause significant damage to the pharyngeal mucosa. Therefore, we extracted the mantis shrimp in segments under general anesth...

The predictive role of carotid artery flow time for anesthesia-induced hypotension in high-risk elderly patients
AbstractHypotension induced by general anesthesia is associated with postoperative complications, increased mortality, and morbidity, particularly elderly patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of corrected carotid artery flow time (FTc) for predicting hypotension following anesthesia induction in patients over 65 years old.  After faculty ethical committee approval and written informed consent, 138 patients (65 years and older, ASA physical status I–III) who scheduled for elective surgery were included in this study. In the pre-operative anesthesia unit, the carotid artery FTc value was me...

Case Report: Profound Anemia in a 2-Year-Old Boy Associated with a Leech in the Oropharynx
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2024 Apr 2:tpmd230677. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0677. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 2-year-old boy presented to Kapsowar Mission Hospital in Kenya with a history of general tiredness associated with mild, unilateral epistaxis and one episode of hematemesis. On admission, he had a hemoglobin value of 3.5 g/dL, with a white cell count of 20.6 × 109/L. The child was examined by the physician on call, with no source of bleeding found. Later that day, after a local physician noted that the presentation could be due to an unrecognized leech infestation, a deep examination of the oropharynx was performed with a...
