Comedones and epidermal cysts on the abdominal skin of a dog occurring after a laparotomy
Can Vet J. 2024 Apr;65(4):371-374.ABSTRACTAn 8-year-old neutered male shih tzu dog underwent laparotomy for cystolithectomy. Ten days later, multiple various-sized cystic nodules were observed on the suture line and surrounding abdominal skin, although the surgical incision had healed well. Microscopically, various-sized cysts lined with thin walls of stratified squamous epithelium in the dermis were dilated and filled with keratin. Adnexal differentiation from the wall was not seen. Thus, the abdominal lesions were diagnosed as comedones and epidermal cysts. Herein, we describe the case of a dog with comedones and epiderm...

Adult colorectal intussusception caused by giant lipoma —A case report
We present a case of colorectal intussusception caused by a giant lipoma.AbstractIntussusception in adults is comparatively infrequent in contrast to children, and in adult colonic intussusception, malignancy is the predominant cause of the leading point. Lipoma, an uncommon tumor in the gastrointestinal tract, rarely induces colonic intussusception in adults. We present the case of a 55-year-old Cambodian man experiencing cramping abdominal pain. He presented with mild abdominal distension with tenderness in the lower abdomen. On the rectal examination a large palpable mass was detected three to four centimeters from the ...

Effect of incremental PEEP titration on postoperative pulmonary complications in patients undergoing emergency laparotomy: a randomized controlled trial
AbstractPostoperative pulmonary complications (PPC) has a significant negative impact and are associated with increased length of hospital stay and cost of care. Emergency surgery is a well-established risk factor for PPC. Previous studies reported that personalized positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) might reduce postoperative atelectasis and postoperative pulmonary complications.N = 168 adult patients undergoing major emergency laparotomy under general anesthesia were recruited in this study. A minimum driving pressure based incremental PEEP titration was compared to a fixed PEEP of 5 cmH2O. The primary outcome w...

Lessons Learned: Large-Scale Perfused Cadaver Training in Three Different Curricular Environments
CONCLUSION: Perfused cadavers can be implemented effectively for hemorrhage control training, surgical and procedure skills, and even exercises in austere environments, but require significant logistical and planning considerations. The training value is maximized with a progressive curriculum from hemorrhage control iterations to more invasive surgical procedures, such as thoracotomy and exploratory laparotomy.PMID:38554274 | DOI:10.1093/milmed/usae110 (Source: Military Medicine)
