Education of non-medical practitioners in Germany —an analysis of course subjects of specialized schools
SummaryIn Germany, non-medical practitioners (NMPs; in German:Heilpraktiker) offer a  broad range of complementary and alternative (CAM) methods. Our aim was to characterize schools for NMPs in Germany in terms of basic (medical) training and advanced education. We found 165 schools for NMPs in a systematic web-based search. As the medical board examination NMPs must take before b uilding a practice exclusively tests their knowledge in conventional medicine, schools hardly include training in CAM methods. Only few schools offered education on CAM methods in their NMP training. Although NMP associations framed requiremen...

(Source: Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift)

Giant cell epulis
SummaryGiant cell epulis (peripheral giant cell granuloma) typically appears as a  reactive benign lesion in the oral cavity in areas following local irritation or chronic trauma. Here we describe the case of a 45-year-old male patient who presented with the chief complaint of a large gingival mass in the anterolateral maxilla. There had been progressive growth within the past few months, with increased painless discomfort during mastication. The patient also reported bleeding during interdental cleaning. A full physical work-up led to the suspicion of giant cell epulis alongside other differentials including mucosal h...

Tumefactive demyelinating CNS lesion in a  60-year-old woman with familial Mediterranean fever
SummaryWe here report on a  60-year-old woman with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) who developed cognitive impairment 16 years after initial diagnosis. On MRI, a new extensive white matter lesion in the right frontal lobe with mild local mass effect but without contrast enhancement was detectable and classified as a tu mefactive lesion. Additional MR spectroscopy showed markedly increased choline levels accompanied by a significant lactate peak, highly suggestive of a low-florid demyelinating process. Although diffuse central nervous system (CNS) lesions have been described in single FMF cases, tumefactive lesio n...

A  case report of posttraumatic stress disorder at the end of life
SummaryA  case of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the last days of life is presented. It shows insufficient pharmacological therapy and PTSD that was not recognized early enough. We discuss the dilemma caused by the necessity of a long-term psychotherapy and the challenge of little time being left at the end of life. Additionally, a language barrier can be a main reason for misinterpreting symptoms of PTSD. (Source: Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift)

Beethoven ’s death—the result of medical malpractice?
SummaryTwo different strands of hair taken from Beethoven ’s head after his death were examined for heavy metals using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser ablation-ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma–mass spectroscopy). The results revealed the presence of small lead particles on the surface of Beethoven’s hairs and fluctuating lead levels in hair medulla along the length of the hair due to alternating lead exposure, with an average lead exposure of 100 times the normal value. The time-line attached to the peaks of these fluctuating values correlate with the pneumonia treatment and the paracenteses performed,...

Beethoven ’s death as the starting point for Rokitansky’s family ties to the art world “We were there when they buried him and when he died we wept.”
This article provides a detailed account of his family and artistic background and also analyses his demands for freedom in both science and the arts, and how they influenced subsequent generations of the Rokitansky family. The Rokitansky, Teltscher, Hüttenbrenner and Lablache families were either directly present at Ludwig van Beethoven’s (1770–1827) deathbed or played a role in his funeral ceremony; within a few years they had also built family ties. The descendants of these families also went on to support artis ts such as Gustav Mahler (1860–1911), Thomas Bernhard (1931–1989) and Peter Turrini (born 1944)....

Beethoven ’s influence on Rokitansky’s methodology
SummaryPrompted by the autopsy of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 –1827) to seek the origins of disease in a changed anatomy, Carl Freiherr von Rokitansky (1804–1878) initiated a paradigm shift from speculative natural philosophical medicine to systematic scientific medicine. Until then, autopsy reports usually contained clinical observations as well as the diagnosis of the attending physician, which the pathologist merely supplemented with a description of the corpse. Influenced by Rokitansky’s search for scientific explanations for disease, pathology evolved from a descriptive to an explanatory science from the earl...
