Treatment of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder: revisiting the complement system and other aspects of pathogenesis
SummaryNeuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) represents a  rare neuroimmunological disease causing recurrent attacks and accumulation of permanent disability in affected patients. The discovery of the pathogenic IgG‑1 antibody targeting a water channel expressed in astrocytes, aquaporin 4, constitutes a milestone achievement. Subsequently, multiple p athophysiological aspects of this distinct disease entity have been investigated. Demyelinating lesions and axonal damage ensue from autoantibodies targeting an astroglial epitope. This conundrum has been addressed in the current disease model, where activation ...

Anti-Ri paraneoplastic neurological syndrome presenting with bilateral cranial nerve  VI palsy and jaw dystonia—a distinctive syndrome within the anti-Ri spectrum?
ConclusionThis case shows similarities with recently published anti-Ri syndromes, which might form a  distinct triad within the anti-Ri spectrum. (Source: Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift)

Anticonvulsive treatment in autoimmune encephalitis: a  systematic literature review
ConclusionFew robust data exist on the particular efficacy of ASM in autoimmune epileptic seizures. While these patients generally seem to respond less well to ASM or surgical interventions, sodium channel blockers may have an additional benefit compared to other substances. However, levels of evidence are low and early IT remains the mainstay of AIE therapy. Future trials should address optimal ASM selection and dosing in AIE. (Source: Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift)

Retrospective analysis of COVID-19  patients with Guillain–Barre, Miller–Fisher, and opsoclonus–myoclonus–ataxia syndromes—a case series
ConclusionAll patient groups displayed a  shorter disease duration if the onset of neurological symptoms occurred shortly after the COVID-19 diagnosis. In particular, both the OMAS patients with symptom onset concurrent with COVID-19 showed only abortive symptoms followed by a swift recovery. This observation would suggest different path omechanisms for immune-mediated diseases depending on the time of onset after an infection. (Source: Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift)

Pattern of bioterrorism in ancient times: lessons to be learned from the microbial and toxicological aspects
SummaryThe current research aimed to analyze the history of bioterrorism in antiquity and to adapt the data to modern medical knowledge. To this end, a  thorough evaluation of the literature related to the ancient history of bioterrorism and modern data was done using the Web of Sciences, Science Direct, Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Results showed that knowledge of bioterrorism has existed since antiquity in different civilizations. Biologi cal and toxicological agents were used as an instrument of legal execution, as a warfare tool in battles, or to eliminate political rivals across nations. Ancient people resear...

Effects of whole-body vibration therapy on pain, functionality, postural stability, and proprioception in patients with subacute and chronic non-specific low back pain: a  systematic review
ConclusionThe majority of the included studies demonstrated significant pain reduction, improvement in physical and daily functioning, and enhanced proprioception. Improvement in postural stability was less consistent. WBVT appears to be a  safe and effective treatment modality for subacute and chronic NLBP when used within a multimodal approach. Future research should focus on standardized settings including assessment methods, treatment regimens, frequencies, and intensities. (Source: Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift)

Efficacy of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy on pain and physical function in patients with non-specific low back pain: a  systematic review
ConclusionPEMF therapy seems to be a  safe and beneficial treatment option for non-specific low back pain, particularly if used as an addition to conventional physical therapy modalities. Future research should focus on standardized settings including assessment methods, treatment regimens, frequencies, and intensities. (Source: Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift)
