Association between sex and Huntington ’s disease: an updated review on symptomatology and prognosis of neurodegenerative disorders
This article therefore discusses the evidence-based role of sex in as pects of symptomatology, pathogenesis, biomarkers, progression, and prognosis of Huntington’s disease, with a secondary review of sex-linked differences in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. An overview of pivotal trials and real-world evidence for CD20-depleting therapy in multiple sclerosis
SummaryMultiple sclerosis (MS) is a  chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system leading to demyelination and neurodegeneration of brain tissue. For a long time, research focused on T cells as the primary mechanism of disease. Driven by reports on the clinical results of B cell-depleting therapies, this therapeutic approach has come into focus in the last decade, and new highly effective treatments have been developed and are now complementing the therapeutic landscape. This review provides an overview of the development of B cell-depleting therapies and shows the advantages and disadvantages of current...

Successful application of pulsed electromagnetic fields in a  patient with post-COVID-19 fatigue: a case report
ConclusionThe use of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy with a device that allows sufficient penetration of the body tissue might be a promising physical modality to manage post-COVID-19 fatigue syndrome, which could reduce clinical and economic health consequences. Clinical sham-controlled studies are needed to evaluate the effect of pulsed electromagnetic fields in this indication. (Source: Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift)

Preoperative anxiety after face-to-face patient assessment versus preanaesthesia telemedicine (PANTEM) in adults: a  randomised clinical trial
SummaryPreanaesthesia consultation is performed to assess and optimise patient-specific risk factors before surgery, to inform patients about anaesthesia techniques and to obtain consent. Aside from face-to-face visits, telephone consultation is increasingly being used clinically. Concentration on the content and avoidance of confounding factors could lead to improved patient preparation. We hypothesised that patients receiving a  telemedical intervention have less anxiety. Patients scheduled for elective surgery were randomised into two groups according to the consultation performed face-to-face (FTF) or via telephone (T...

Anaphylactic reaction to carboplatin diagnosed by skin testing —a reliable tool in platinum-based immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions
SummaryImmediate-type hypersensitivity reactions (IHRs) to carboplatin (CA) are most commonly reported in ovarian cancer patients. A  54-year-old woman with stage IV melanoma suffering from metastasis in the entire right lower extremity was presented to our allergy outpatient clinic for diagnostic work-up due to an anaphylactic reaction with palmoplantar erythema, conjunctivitis along with facial erythema, and an incipient decr ease in blood pressure during a chemotherapy regimen with dacarbazine and carboplatin upon re-administration. A subsequently carried out allergological work-up with skin testing (ST) revealed CA...

Hemoptoe, thin-walled lung cysts, and spontaneous pneumothorax are features of metastatic cutaneous angiosarcoma
We present a  case of bilateral cystic lung metastases originating from cutaneous angiosarcoma (cAS) of the scalp in a 73-year-old man. He presented with hemoptysis and recurrent bilateral pneumothorax. The clinical, radiological, and histological features and a potential pathophysiological mechanism of pulmo nary changes in cutaneous angiosarcoma are discussed. Experiences with Innovation Fund healthcare models in primary care: a  qualitative study amongst German general practitioners
SummaryThe Innovation Fund was set up in 2015 with the aim of improving medical care in the German statutory health insurance system. Primary care needs to be involved in testing interventions and new forms of care for effectiveness and inclusion in standard care. There has so far been hardly any research on how far Innovation Fund models accommodate the primary care setting, or on the experience general practitioners have had with these models. Between September 2021 and January 2022, 36  semi-standardized individual interviews were performed with general practitioners who had already participated in Innovation Fund proj...

Real-world evidence for cladribine tablets in multiple sclerosis: further insights into efficacy and safety
SummaryCladribine (CLAD) is a  purine nucleoside analog approved in tablet form to treat highly active multiple sclerosis (MS). CLAD tablets are the first oral therapy with an infrequent dosing schedule, administered in two annual treatment courses, each divided into two treatment cycles comprising 4–5 days of treatment. The efficacy and safety of CLAD tablets have been verified in randomized controlled clinical trials. Clinical observational studies are performed in more representative populations and over more extended periods, and thus provide valuable complementary insights. Here, we summarize the available evidenc...

Sarcopenia —a geriatric pandemic
SummaryWith growing life expectancy, the prevalence of frailty and sarcopenia will continuously increase during the next decades. Geographical differences have been described, and depending on the population studied, sarcopenia is evident in 10% of community-dwelling people, increasing up to 40  to 50% among those living in nursing homes. Sarcopenia is a complex age-related process of multifactorial pathogenesis, influenced by lifestyle, nutrition, biological processes during aging, and also immunological and endocrine mechanisms. For diagnostic criteria, physical parameters (muscle mass measurement) and functional aspec...
