Effects of high-pressure homogenization and ultrasound on the composition, structure, and physicochemical properties of proteins extracted from Nannochloropsis Oceania
This study examined the effects of high-pressure homogenization (HPH) and ultrasonication pre-treatment on the structural and physicochemical properties of proteins extracted from defatted Nannochloropsis Oceania biomass (DNOB). HPH treatment was found to enhance the solubility of protein extracted from DNOB compared to ultrasound, where samples pretreated with three passes (3P) of HPH exhibited lower solubility than two passes (2P). The morphology of extracted samples was visualized by scanning electron microscopy, which HPH pre-treatment, especially with more passes, were able to breakdown DNOB into fragments. Alternativ...

Numerical simulation of cavitation-vortex interaction mechanism in an advanced rotational hydrodynamic cavitation reactor
This study investigated the interaction mechanism between cavitation and vortex in a representative interaction-type ARHCR for the first time using the "simplified flow field strategy" and the Q-criterion. The findings reveal that the flow instability caused by CGUs leads to intricate helical and vortex flows, subsequently giving rise to both sheet and vortex cavitation. Subsequently, utilizing the Q-criterion, the vortex structures are identified to be concentrated inside and at CGU edges with evolution process of mergence and separation. These vortex structures directly influence the shape and dimensions of cavities, est...

Ultrasound viscous reduction effects on the proteolysis of soy protein isolate at a limited degree of hydrolysis: Changes in the functional characteristics and protein structure
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Mar 11;104:106847. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106847. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHigh-concentration soy protein isolate was subjected to ultrasonication for viscosity reduction to assist the process of limited enzymatic hydrolysis. Ultrasonication (20 kHz, 10 min, 160 W/L) effectively reduced the viscosity of soy protein isolate at a comparatively high concentration of 14 % (w/v) and promoted the limited enzymatic hydrolysis (controlled degree of hydrolysis of 12 %) with a higher peptide yield than that of the conventional method. The correlations between substrate viscosity and peptide yield, ...

Experimental investigation on the characteristics of the shock wave emitted by the cavitation bubble near the air bubble
This study explores the mitigation of cavitation damage in hydraulic engineering through air entrainment. The primary aim is to experimentally analyze the shock wave characteristics emitted by cavitation bubbles adjacent to air bubbles affixed to a tube nozzle. The schlieren optical system is utilized to visualize the shock wave, while a hydrophone measures its pressure. Experiments are conducted on cavitation bubbles induced by the spark-generated method in the vicinity of air bubbles, varying the dimensionless distances and sizes of the air bubbles. The results indicate that (1) The introduction of an air bubble noticeab...

The violent collapse of vapor bubbles in cryogenic liquids
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Mar 8;104:106845. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106845. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVapor bubbles in cryogenic fluids may collapse violently under subcooled and pressurized conditions. Despite important implications for engineering applications such as cavitation erosion in liquid propellant rocket engines, these intense phenomena are still largely unexplored. In this paper, we systematically investigate the ambient conditions leading to the occurrence of violent collapses in liquid nitrogen and analyze their thermodynamic characteristics. Using Brenner's time ratio χ, the regime of violent collap...
