Study on stabilized mechanism of high internal phase Pickering emulsions based on commercial yeast proteins: Modulating the characteristics of Pickering particle via sonication
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Mar 8;104:106843. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106843. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe primary significance of this work is that the commercial yeast proteins particles were successfully used to characterize the high internal phase Pickering emulsions (HIPPEs). The different sonication time (0,3,7,11,15 min) was used to modulate the structure and interface characteristics of yeast proteins (YPs) that as Pickering particles. Immediately afterward, the influence of YPs particles prepared at different sonication time on the rheological behavior and coalescence mechanism of HIPPEs was investigated. Th...

The impact of ultrasound treatment on glycolytic enzymes when applied to crude extracts from early post-mortem bovine muscle
In this study, homogenates (prepared from early post-mortem Longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle) were subjected to different ultrasound intensities (0 %/60 %/100 % amp) and treatment durations (15/ 30 min). The effect of these treatments on the inherent activity of the glycolytic enzymes was investigated using an in vitro glycolytic buffer model system. It was found that ultrasound treatment intensity and duration had a significant interactive effect on the rate of pH decline, and on reducing sugars and lactic acid concentrations, specifically following the 100 % amp ultrasound for 30 min treatment and between 30 and 2...

Construction, characterization and bioactivity evaluation of curcumin nanocrystals with extremely high solubility and dispersion prepared by ultrasound-assisted method
In this study, we prepared a series of nanocrystals via ultrasound-assisted method to improve the solubility and availability of Cur. The results showed artemisia sphaerocephala krasch polysaccharide (ASKP), gum arabic (GA) and wheat protein (WP) were outstanding stabilizers for nanocryatals except traditional agent, poloxamer 188 (F68). The obtained curcumin nanocrystals (Cur-NC) displayed a rod-shaped, crystal- and nanosized structure, and extremely high loading capacity (more over 80 %, w/w). Compared with raw powder, Cur-NC greatly improved the water solubility and dispersibility, and the slow and complete release of C...

Dynamics of cavitation bubbles in viscous liquids in a tube during a transient process
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Mar 5;104:106840. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106840. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe experimentally, numerically, and theoretically investigate the dynamics of cavitation bubbles in viscous liquids in a tube during a transient process. In experiments, cavitation bubbles are generated by a modified tube-arrest setup, and the bubble evolution is captured with high-speed imaging. Numerical simulations using OpenFOAM are employed to validate our quasi-one-dimensional theoretical model, which effectively characterizes the bubble dynamics. We find that cavitation onset is minimally affected by the liqu...

Selective (sono)photocatalytic cleavage of lignin-inspired β-O-4 linkages to phenolics by ultrasound derived 1-D titania nanomaterials
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Mar 2;104:106829. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106829. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCatalytic conversion of lignin to value-added aromatic compounds is still an open challenge, since the selective cleavage of the linkages interconnecting the aromatic molecules, especially the β-O-4 ones, is not efficiently achieved yet. Herein, novel titania-based nanostructured materials were synthesized using low-power-low-frequency ultrasound that demonstrated high efficiency for the selective cleavage of Cα-Cβ bond of β-O-4 linkages of lignin-inspired model compounds. Going a step ahead, experiments of sono...

Fabrication of high-preformance emulsifier from conjugating maltodextrin onto myofibrillar protein peptide with microwave- ultrasound synergy
In this study, we systematically investigated the emulsifying capabilities of myofibrillar protein (MP)- and MP peptide (MPP)-based conjugates synthesized through intensification techniques: water bath (WB), microwave, ultrasound, and the combined ultrasound-microwave (UM) methods. Compared with WB, microwave, and ultrasound treatments, the combined UM treatment greatly promoted the glycation reaction because ultrasound and microwave mutually reinforced modification effects. The resultant conjugate structure tended to unfold with more flexible conformation and homogeneous morphology. Moreover, the emulsifying properties of...

Continuous ultrasonic ozone coupling technology-assisted control of ceramic membrane fouling coupled enhanced multiphase mixing to treat dye wastewater and CFD flow field simulation
In this study, ozone catalysts (hydrogenation-modified red mud, HM-RM) successfully prepared by hydrogenation-modification of industrial hazardous solid waste red mud (RM) as a raw material in accordance with the viewpoint of treating waste with waste and using waste. Meanwhile, as for the common phenomenon of membrane fouling, uneven distribution of multiphase solid catalysts and ozone in liquids, the addition of ultrasound can not only disperse materials, but also play a role in online cleaning of ceramic membranes and catalysts. The optimum treatment conditions for Rhodamine B (RhB) solution with volume of 2 L and conce...

On efficient modelling of radical production in cavitation assisted reactors
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Mar 2;104:106833. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106833. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProcess intensification by cavitation is gaining widespread attention due to the benefits that the intense bubble collapse conditions can provide, yet, several knowledge gaps exist in the modelling of such systems. This work studies the numerical prediction of single bubble dynamics and the various approaches that can be employed to estimate the changes in the chemical composition of cavitating bubbles. Specific emphasis is placed on the prediction of the radical production rates during bubble collapse and the compu...
