Effect of packaging thickness and muscle type on ultrasound-assisted beef quality
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Jan 24;103:106777. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106777. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHigh-intensity ultrasound (HIU) can modify muscle structure, leading to improvements in tenderness. However, factors such as packing type and muscle complexity may attenuate the acoustic cavitation. In this research, the effect of packing thickness (40.6-70 μm) on the quality of bovine Gluteus medius and Biceps femoris treated with HIU (37 kHz, 90 W/cm2, 40 min) was evaluated. The hardness of G. medius decreased significantly as the thickness of the packing bag decreased. The wide interfibrillar and intermyofibril...

Ultrasonic-ethanol pretreatment assisted aqueous enzymatic extraction of hemp seed oil with low Δ < sup > 9 < /sup > -THC
In this study, ultrasonic-ethanol pretreatment combined with AEE was developed for oil extraction from hemp seeds. The oil yield reached a maximum of 23.32 % at 200 W ultrasonic power and 30 min ultrasonic time, at this point, the degradation rate of Δ9-THC was 83.11 %. By determining the composition of hemp seed before and after pretreatment, it was shown that ultrasonic-ethanol pretreatment reduced the protein content of the raw material. An enzyme mixture consisting of pectinase and hemicellulase (1/1/1, w/w/w) was experimentally determined to be used, and the AEE extraction conditions were optimized using the Plackett...

Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Jan 20;103:106779. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106779. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPotato chips are popular high-consuming ready-to-eat meals in all of the world which specially attract a lot of attention from youth and children. Reducing oil absorption and improving the quality of chips are major undertakings within the industry. This research aimed to find the best ultrasonic bath-based method by investigating the optimal ultrasonic pre-treatment and developing an ultrasound (US) assisted frying system (UAFS) to reduce the oil absorption of potato chips while maintaining an acceptable quality. ...

Optimizing the ultrasonic extraction of polyphenols from mango peel and investigating the characteristics, antioxidant activity and storage stability of extract nanocapsules in maltodextrin/whey protein isolate
In this study, the extraction and nanoencapsulation of mango peel extract (MPE) were investigated to enhance its stability and preserve its antioxidant properties. Initially, using the central composite design (CCD)-response surface methodology (RSM), optimal conditions for the extraction of MPE via an ultrasonic system were determined to be a temperature of 10.53 °C, a time of 34.35 min, and an ethanol concentration of 26.62 %. Subsequently, the extracted extract was spray-dried and nanoencapsulated using three types of coatings: maltodextrin, whey protein isolate (WPI), and their combination. The results showed that nan...

Ultra-high-speed dynamics of acoustic droplet vaporization in soft biomaterials: Effects of viscoelasticity, frequency, and bulk boiling point
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Jan 9;103:106754. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106754. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhase-shift droplets are a highly adaptable platform for biomedical applications of ultrasound. The spatiotemporal response of phase-shift droplets to focused ultrasound above a certain pressure threshold, termed acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV), is influenced by intrinsic features (e.g., bulk boiling point) and extrinsic factors (e.g., driving frequency and surrounding media). A deep understanding of ADV dynamics is critical to ensure the robustness and repeatability of an ADV-assisted application. Here, we inte...

Ultrasonic cavitation induced Vibrio parahaemolyticus entering an apoptosis-like death process through SOS response
In conclusion, the biological lethal effect of ultrasound treatment is not solely a mechanical cell necrosis process as traditionally viewed, but also a programmed cell death process regulated by cellular adaptation. This enriched the biological effect pathway of ultrasound sterilization.PMID:38245921 | PMC:PMC10830854 | DOI:10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106771 (Source: Ultrasonics Sonochemistry)

Modification of ultrasound-pretreated montmorillonite using poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) for W and Mo separation and the sequential application in removal of heavy metals
In this study, poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDADMA) was used to modify ultrasound-pretreated montmorillonite (Mt) for W and molybdenum (Mo) separation for the first time, and the resultant tetrathiomolybdate (MoS42-)-loaded composite was further tested to remove heavy metals instead of regeneration. Among the three variables of ultrasound pretreatment, that is, Mt concentration, ultrasound power, and treatment time, the Mt concentration exhibited the most significant influence followed by ultrasound power on the separation performance of W and Mo. Compared to the distance of the interlayer space and the surfac...

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe blood-brain barrier (BBB) maintains brain homeostasis, regulates influx and efflux transport, and provides protection to the brain tissue. Ultrasound (US) and microbubble (MB)-mediated blood-brain barrier opening is an effective and safe technique for drug delivery in-vitro and in-vivo. However, the exact mechanism underlying this technique is still not fully elucidated. The aim of the study is to explore the contribution of transcytosis in the BBB transient opening using an in-vitro model of BBB. Utilizing a d...

Ultrasound synergistic slightly acidic electrolyzed water treatment of grapes: Impacts on microbial loads, wettability, and postharvest storage quality
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Jan 4;103:106751. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2023.106751. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicrobial contamination is the principal factor in the deterioration of postharvest storage quality in grapes. To mitigate this issue, we explored a synergistic treatment which combines ultrasound (US) and slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW), and rigorously compared with conventional water cleaning (CW), exclusive US treatment, and standalone SAEW treatment. The US + SAEW treatment proved to be markedly superior in reducing total bacterial, mold & yeast counts on grapes. Specifically, it achieved reduction...
