Control mechanisms of different bionic structures for hydrofoil cavitation
Ultrason Sonochem. 2023 Dec 27;102:106745. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2023.106745. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCavitation limits the efficient and stable operation of rotating machinery. The exploration of control methods for hydrofoil cavitation is important for improving the performance of hydraulic machinery. The leading-edge protuberances of the humpback flipper and the spine structure of the tail fin of sailfish are two common bionic structures for cavitation control; however, the control effects of both have limitations. Accordingly, in this study, a passive control method for hydrofoil cavitation was developed by com...

Study on the mechanism of improving the quality of salted egg yolks by ultrasonic synergistic NaCl dry-curing
Ultrason Sonochem. 2023 Dec 27;102:106746. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2023.106746. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe dry separate curing of duck egg yolks was carried out by ultrasonic synergize NaCl (sodium chloride) and NaCl alone. The mechanism of the amelioration of salted egg yolk quality by ultrasonic synergistic NaCl dry-curing was studied. The quality variations of the salted egg yolks were analyzed for the same curing time and NaCl content achieved by ultrasonic synergistic NaCl curing and NaCl curing alone. The results showed that under the same salting time, the NaCl content, oil exudation and chewiness of U48-SEY ...

An amplified sonodynamic therapy by a nanohybrid of titanium dioxide-gold-polyethylene glycol-curcumin: HeLa cancer cells treatment in 2D monolayer and 3D spheroid models
In this study, a nanohybrid of titanium dioxide-gold-polyethylene glycol-curcumin (TiO2-Au-PEG-Cur NH), as a novel US sensitizer, was synthesized, characterized, and applied for SDT of HeLa cancer cells in 2D monolayer model, and also a 3D spheroid model to bridge the gap between 2D cell culture and in vivo future studies. TiO2-Au-PEG-Cur NH contained TiO2 nanoparticles of 36 ± 11 nm in diameter, PEG-curcumin as a filler, and gold nanoparticles of 21 ± 7 nm in diameter with a high purity and a 35:17 of Ti:Au ratio (W/W), and it had a band gap of 2.4 eV, a zeta potential of -23 ± 7 mV, high stability upon US radiation cy...

Pulsed-control plasma-activated water: An emerging technology to assist ultrasound for fresh-cut produce washing
In this study, we explored the use of plasma-activated water (PAW) in combination with ultrasound (US) for food disinfection. Our research introduces a novel approach that utilizes a pulsed-control (PC) method to modify the PAW. The resulting PCPAW exhibits significantly higher concentrations of key reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) compared to conventional PAW. The disinfection efficacy of US-PCPAW against fresh-cut lettuce was compared to that of US-PAW, US, and PCPAW. The combination of US and PCPAW was highly effective in reducing food-borne pathogens, surpassing single treatments in count reduction and minim...

Effective removal of As from a high arsenic-bearing ZnSO < sub > 4 < /sub > solution by ultrasonic enhanced ozonation in a one-pot method
In this study, we propose a novel ultrasonic (US) ozone one-pot method for effectively removing As from a high-arsenic ZnSO4 solution. In this method, as in ZnSO4 solution was removed by ultrasound enhanced ozone oxidation combined with zinc roasting dust (ZRD). No secondary pollution will occur with the addition of ZRD and ozone, as neither introduces new impurities. The experimental results show that under the conditions of initial As and Fe concentrations of 1640 mg/L and 2963 mg/L, US power of 480 W, frequency of 20 kHz, reaction temperature of 60 °C, reaction time of 1 h, ZRD dose of 12 g/L and gas flow rate of 900 m...

Cavitation cloud formation and surface damage of a model stone in a high-intensity focused ultrasound field
Ultrason Sonochem. 2023 Dec 22;102:106738. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2023.106738. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis work investigates the fundamental role of cavitation bubble clouds in stone comminution by focused ultrasound. The fragmentation of stones by ultrasound has applications in medical lithotripsy for the comminution of kidney stones or gall stones, where their fragmentation is believed to result from the high acoustic wave energy as well as the formation of cavitation. Cavitation is known to contribute to erosion and to cause damage away from the target, yet the exact contribution and mechanisms of cavitation rem...
