Enhanced ultrasonic degradation of methylene blue using a catalyst-free dual-frequency treatment
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Feb 3;103:106792. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106792. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMethylene blue is one of the most common pollutants found in wastewater, primarily due to its widespread use in the dye industry. Consequently, it is imperative to explore environmentally friendly and efficient methods for degrading this pollutant into non-toxic byproducts. While ultrasonic degradation methods in combination with additives or catalysts have proven effective, such additives or catalysts may inadvertently contribute to secondary pollution. Moreover, the preparation of these catalysts imposes an additi...

Towards scaling up the sonochemical synthesis of Pt-nanocatalysts
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Feb 5;103:106794. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106794. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLarge scale production of electrocatalysts for electrochemical energy conversion devices such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells must be developed to reduce their cost. The current chemical reduction methods used for this synthesis suffer from problems with achieving similar particle properties such as particle size and catalytic activity when scaling up the volume or the precursor concentration. The continuous production of reducing agents through the sonochemical synthesis method could help maintain the reduci...

Radical generation and bactericidal activity of nanobubbles produced by ultrasonic irradiation of carbonated water
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Feb 14;103:106809. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106809. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOur previous study showed that nanobubbles (NBs) encapsulating CO2 gas have bactericidal activity due to reactive oxygen species (ROS) (Yamaguchi et al., 2020). Here, we report that bulk NBs encapsulating CO2 can be efficiently generated by ultrasonically irradiating carbonated water using a piezoelectric transducer with a frequency of 1.7 MHz. The generated NBs were less than 100 nm in size and had a lifetime of 500 h. Furthermore, generation of ROS in the NB suspension was investigated using electron spin resonan...

Ultrasound-induced structural changes of different milk fat globule membrane protein-phospholipids complexes and their effects on physicochemical and functional properties of emulsions
This study investigated the effects of ultrasonic time (5 min, 10 min, 15 min) and power (150 W,300 W,500 W) on the structural properties of three types of phospholipids composed of different fatty acids (milk fat globule membrane phospholipid (MPL), egg yolk lecithin (EYL), soybean lecithin (SL)) and milk fat globule membrane protein (MFGMP). We found that the ultrasound treatment changed the conformation of the protein, and the emulsions prepared by the pretreatment showed better emulsification and stability, the lipid droplets were also more evenly distributed. Meanwhile, the flocculation phenomenon of the lipid droplet...

Cavitation-induced particle engulfment via enhancing particle-interface interaction in solidification
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Feb 8;103:106801. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106801. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTParticle engulfment plays a vital role in the application of particulate reinforced metal matrix composites fabricated by ingot metallurgy. During solidification, particles are nevertheless pushed by an advancing front. As a model system, TiB2p/Al composites were used to investigate the particle engulfment facilitated by acoustic cavitation. The implosion of bubbles drives the particles plunging towards the solid/liquid interface, which increases the engulfment probability. The secondary dendrite arms are refined fr...

Optimizing the dewatering performance of zinc smelting iron Slag: Investigating the influence of ultrasonic Time, ultrasonic Power, and Liquid-Solid ratio using response surface methodology
This study explores a novel ultrasonic pretreatment process for iron slag. Using the response surface methodology, we investigated the effects of ultrasonic power, ultrasonic time, liquid-to-solid ratio, and their interactions on the water content, capillary suction time (CST), and filtration resistance of the slag. Regression equations were established to predict the relationships between the water content, CST, filtration resistance, and the various factors. The optimal process parameters were determined as an ultrasonic power of 60 W, ultrasonic time of 22 s, and a liquid-to-solid ratio of 4:1. Under these conditions, t...

Sulfation on polysaccharides from Zizania latifolia extracted using ultrasound: Characterization, antioxidant and anti-non-small cell lung cancer activities
In this study, Z. latifolia polysaccharides (ZLP) were extracted using UAE under an optimized power, followed by sulfation to give three derivatives (SZLP-1 ∼ 3). After characterization, the antioxidant and anti-NSCLC activities were evaluated. The optimal ultrasonic power for ZLP extraction was screened out to be 300 W, under which the yield was 16.9 ± 2.10 %, and the scavenging rate against 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical was 63.3 ± 5.71 %, significantly higher than those of other powers and hot-water extraction. A series of characterizations fully confirmed the sulfated modification of ZLP. Sulfation i...

The objective of this paper is to discuss the influence of geometric parameters on the performance of the rotational hydrodynamic cavitation reactor (RHCR) using numerical method. The novel RHCR is implemented by modifying a centrifugal impeller into a new one using the annular slit constriction (ASC) with circumferentially distributed blind holes. The cavitation intensity and cavitation generation rate are selected to evaluate the cavitation performance, the head is used to assess conveying performance, and the entropy generation theory is used to evaluate the energy loss in the impeller. The effect of the axial width, ra...
