ADHD in Older Adults: Diagnostic Confusion and Treatment Hesitancy
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is an unrecognized disorder in patients over the age of 50. The evaluation of cognitive symptoms in older adults rarely considers ADHD in the differential diagnoses. His presentation will review the prevalence of ADHD in adults and its persistence over the age of 50. I will discuss the clinical presentation and subjective symptoms of these patients. I'll review ADHD symptom checklist that complements the clinical evaluation. Because of age, there are multiple factors contributing to cognitive complaints that will be discussed for a differential diagnosis. (Source: The American Journ...

Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy for Older Adults with Chronic Pain: Theory, Evidence, and Video Case Example
Chronic pain affects millions of older adults and causes substantial disability. Yet treatment is challenging, since older patients are susceptible to serious risks from pain medications or invasive procedures. Psychotherapy is a promising treatment option because it is generally well-tolerated. However, standard psychotherapies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), produce only small effect size benefits. Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy (EAET) is an innovative psychological approach with a unique conceptual model focused on emotional conflict and trauma —major...

Overburdened by Regulations in Long-Term Care: A Public Health Crisis in Need of Policy Solutions to Improve Care and Access
The US population continues to age. with people over 65 years constituting 13# of the general population. By 2050, this percentage is expected to rise to nearly 25%. With the "Graying of America", the number of individuals with multiple physical and mental comorbidities requiring long-term care continues to rise sharply. Due to the deinstitutionalization of the state hospitals, the number of mentally ill patients has increased significantly in long-term care. Today, approximately 25% of newly admitted nursing home residents has mental illness (defined by schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety). (Source: Th...

Sleeping while Aging: Research Insights into the Complex Relationships of Sleep and Mental Health among Older Adults
Sleep disturbances are central to many psychiatric disorders and have clear implications for cognition, brain health and aging, though the neurobiological mechanisms connecting sleep and psychopathology are not well understood. Older adults have different sleep architecture as well as increased incidence of insomnia, sleep apnea, and other sleep disorders compared to younger adults. However, age-related sleep problems are not part of “healthy aging” and warrant treatment to improve outcomes for older adults. (Source: The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry)

Enhancing the mental health and well-being of aging autistic adults
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social-communication difficulties and restricted, repetitive behaviors and interests. Although initially conceptualized as a childhood disorder, ASD is a lifelong condition affecting between one and two percent of adults in the US. This session features a combination of findings from cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of autistic adults, focusing on psychiatric co-occurring conditions, functioning, and cognition. Not Your Average Grief: Addressing the Many Layers of Dementia-Related Loss
Grief is a common and significant human emotional experience. It has known physical, emotional, and social ramifications in patients and their families. In particular, grief is central to the dementia experience for all involved – the people living with dementia (PLWD) themselves, and for all of their caregivers: family members, staff members of assisted living facility (ALF) settings, and clinicians. Grief can ultimately take a large toll on all of these different players in the dementia experience, including medically, interpersonally, and socially, and end up at times causing significant harm if not recognized and add...

Developing a Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Curriculum for Trainees
The importance of diversity in medical education has become increasingly clear with strong evidence showing its benefits in helping to reduce healthcare disparities and mortality, increase access to medical care, increase the number of clinicians practicing in medically underserved and rural communities, increased patient trust, improvement in patient-physician relationships, and better financial outcomes for health systems. As leaders in graduate medical education, the Teaching and Training Committee of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP) proposed the creation and development of a curriculum that fost...

Inflammatory and molecular markers senescence in late-life neuropsychiatric disorders: from diagnosis to treatment
Mood disorders in older adults are common and disabling conditions associated with poor health outcomes, including cognitive impairment and multiple medical comorbidities. Recent evidence suggests that pro-inflammatory and molecular senescence burdens may represent mechanisms underlying the association between mood disorders and adverse outcomes in older adults. They can also help guide the development of interventions and identify individuals who could benefit from specific treatments. In this session, we will present novel data showing the association between neuroinflammation (measured by the levels of IL1b, IL1ra, TNF,...

Inappropriate Sexual Behaviors in Dementia
This presentation aims to review the current literature and the management of inappropriate sexual behaviors in dementia (ISBD). ISBD are challenging to assess, manage and treat due to being of multifactorial etiology, involving stigma and consequences and with the limited treatment modalities present.Sexual disinhibition is uncommon but a challenging symptom to address in older adults with neurocognitive disorders. Due to the lack of large-scale studies, there is no gold standard treatment for sexual disinhibition, and treatment is primarily left up to the physician's discretion based on the severity and onset of the pati...

Real World Prescribing: Use of Anti-Amyloid Antibodies in Clinical Practice
Anti-amyloid antibody therapy is now available for clinical use in MCI due to Alzheimer's disease and mild Alzheimer's dementia. This symposium will focus on clinical aspects of screening, prescribing and safety monitoring. The first talk will address patient eligibility and therapy implementation. The speaker will discuss disease staging and how to recognize neuroimaging abnormalities and concomitant medications that would exclude patient from eligibility. The speaker will explore use of CSF or amyloid PET to confirm amyloid pathology and use of ApoE genotyping to assess ARIA risk. (Source: The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry)
