Association of Depression With the Progression of Multimorbidity in Older Adults: A Population-Based Cohort Study
This study was aimed to determine whether depression is associated with progression in the severity and complexity of multimorbidity, considering the influence of depression's severity and subtype.METHODS: As a part of the Korean Longitudinal Study on Cognitive Aging and Dementia, this population-based cohort study followed a random sample of community-dwelling Koreans aged 60 and older for 8 years at 2-year intervals starting in 2010. Participants included those who completed mood and multimorbidity assessments and did not exhibit complex multimorbidity at the study's outset. Depression was assessed using the Geriatric De...

Study Partner Report of Apathy in Older Adults is Associated with AD Biomarkers: Findings from the Harvard Aging Brain Study
CONCLUSIONS: Study-partner-reported, but not self-reported, apathy in older adults is associated with AD pathology, and we observed this relationship starting from the preclinical stage. Our findings highlight the importance of collateral information in capturing AD-related apathy.PMID:38443298 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2024.01.020 (Source: The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry)

Chasing Causality: Understanding the Link Between Benzodiazepine Exposure and Dementia Risk
In this issue of the Journal, Gallet et al. report a study of the impact of benzodiazepines on brain metabolism in benzodiazepine users (1). In this commentary, we highlight not only the importance of their work in context, but also attempt to understand why seeking the causal relationships between benzodiazepine usage, brain metabolism, anxiety, and Alzheimer's dementia risk is of critical importance.
