Clinical Accuracy of Serum Neurofilament Light to Differentiate Frontotemporal Dementia from Primary Psychiatric Disorders is Age-Dependent
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is one of the most common forms of early-onset dementia (1). The most common presentation is the behavioural variant of FTD (bvFTD) manifesting in personality and behavioural changes (2). Symptoms like decreased empathy and emotional reactivity, apathy, and compulsive behaviours significantly overlap with those of non-neurodegenerative primary psychiatric disorders (PPD) including major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD), schizophrenia (SZ), and personality disorders (2,3). Our older adult population, including those living with cognitive impairment, is ethnically and racially diverse and will become even more diverse in the coming years. Ensuring that all segments of our older adult population with cognitive impairment have access to timely and high-quality healthcare is essential from a health equity perspective (1).
