Artificial intelligence and the sense of self of older adults: A philosophy of science perspective
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly entering all aspects of culture all over the world. Several generative pretrained transformer models designed to understand and generate natural language are publicly available and are becoming part of the daily experience of large segments of the population. A recent report estimates that generative AI will add $2.6 to 4.4 trillions to the economy by increasing productivity.1 In psychiatry, large language models (LLMs) have begun to reduce administrative tasks. Depressive symptoms and plasma markers of Alzheimer's disease and neurodegeneration: a coordinated meta-analysis of 8 cohort studies
Depression has been coined as one of the main risk factors for Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia (1-4). One longitudinal study in older adults found that with every increasing point on a depressive symptom scale, the risk of AD increased by 19% (5). Another study found that high levels of depressive symptoms were associated with a 50% increased risk of dementia (6). However, the mechanistic relationship between the two is not yet fully understood. Some studies have highlighted depression as a possible risk factor while others suggest that depression may in fact be an early manifestation of underlying AD (7,8). (Source: The...

Review of Management Considerations for Excoriation Disorder in Older Adults
Excoriation (skin picking) disorder is a psychocutaneous condition defined as repetitive picking that results in skin damage despite repeated attempts to reduce the behavior.1 Afflicted individuals often spend hours per day picking at one or multiple locations of the body; this contributes to emotional distress, impairment in daily activities, utilization of healthcare resources, excess morbidity, and hospitalization in severe cases.2 Skin picking behaviors typically develop in adolescence to early adulthood and present as episodes that wax and wane in response to one or multiple stressors. Time to diagnosis and its predictors in syndromes associated with Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration
Refinement of diagnostic criteria has significantly improved diagnostic accuracy of syndromes associated with Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration in tertiary referral centers [1]. However, the time to diagnosis, i.e. the difference between the time in which one of the core symptoms was first noted and the time in which a diagnosis of FTLD-associated syndrome is made, relies on disease awareness and recognition of one of the possible FTLD symptoms by general practitioners or primary care centers. Reducing the time to diagnosis might result in a timely initiation of symptomatic treatment, early involvement in clinical trials t...
