Red Yeast Rice and Statin Therapy in Patients with Hypercholesterolemia and the Comorbidities: A Retrospective Cohort Study on Lipid-Lowering Effects and Cardiovascular Outcomes
In conclusion, both RYR and statins effectively lower blood lipid levels and mitigate related complications. Combining these therapies may lead to fewer ER visits, reduced stroke frequency, and fewer MI hospitalizations in hypertensive and kidney disease patients, and they decreased all-cause mortality in the kidney disease population. Further research on combined therapy is warranted.PMID:38480501 | DOI:10.1142/S0192415X24500174 (Source: The American Journal of Chinese Medicine)

Curcumin Analog L48H37 Induces Apoptosis in Human Oral Cancer Cells by Activating Caspase Cascades and Downregulating the Inhibitor of Apoptosis Proteins through JNK/p38 Signaling
Am J Chin Med. 2024 Mar 14:1-17. doi: 10.1142/S0192415X24500241. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTL48H37 is a synthetic curcumin analog that has anticancer potentials. Here, we further explored the anticancer effect of L48H37 on oral cancer cells and its mechanistic acts. Cell cycle distribution was assessed using flow cytometric analysis. Apoptosis was elucidated by staining with PI/Annexin V and activation of the caspase cascade. Cellular signaling was explored using apoptotic protein profiling, Western blotting, and specific inhibitors. Our findings showed that L48H37 significantly reduced the cell viability of SCC-9 and H...

Mechanism of Acupuncture in Treating Obesity: Advances and Prospects
Am J Chin Med. 2024;52(1):1-33. doi: 10.1142/S0192415X24500010. Epub 2024 Feb 8.ABSTRACTObesity is a common metabolic syndrome that causes a significant burden on individuals and society. Conventional therapies include lifestyle interventions, bariatric surgery, and pharmacological therapies, which are not effective and have a high risk of adverse events. Acupuncture is an effective alternative for obesity, it modulates the hypothalamus, sympathetic activity and parasympathetic activity, obesity-related hormones (leptin, ghrelin, insulin, and CCK), the brain-gut axis, inflammatory status, adipose tissue browning, muscle bl...

Berberine Metabolites Stimulate GLP-1 Secretion by Alleviating Oxidative Stress and Mitochondrial Dysfunction
Am J Chin Med. 2024;52(1):253-274. doi: 10.1142/S0192415X24500113. Epub 2024 Feb 8.ABSTRACTBerberine (BBR) is a principal component of Rhizoma coptidis known for its therapeutic potential in treating diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity. Despite the trace levels of BBR in plasma, it's believed that its metabolites play a pivotal role in its biological activities. While BBR is recognized to promote GLP-1 production in intestinal L cells, the cytoprotective effects of its metabolites on these cells are yet to be explored. The present study investigates the effects of BBR metabolites on GLP-1 secretion...

Epub 2024 Feb 8.ABSTRACTTaraxacum refers to the genus Taraxacum, which has a long history of use as a medicinal plant and is widely distributed around the world. There are over 2500 species in the genus Taraxacum recorded as medicinal plants in China, Central Asia, Europe, and the Americas. It has traditionally been used for detoxification, diuresis, liver protection, the treatment of various inflammations, antimicrobial properties, and so on. We used the most typically reported Taraxacum officinale as an example and assembled its chemical makeup, including...

Efficacy and Mechanisms of Natural Products as Therapeutic Interventions for Chronic Respiratory Diseases
Am J Chin Med. 2024;52(1):57-88. doi: 10.1142/S0192415X24500034. Epub 2024 Feb 14.ABSTRACTChronic respiratory diseases are long-term conditions affecting the airways and other lung components that are characterized by a high prevalence, disability rate, and mortality rate. Further optimization of their treatment is required. Natural products, primarily extracted from organisms, possess specific molecular and structural formulas as well as distinct chemical and physical properties. These characteristics grant them the advantages of safety, gentleness, accessibility, and minimal side effects. The numerous advances in the use...
