In order to shed light on the first application of human functional stereotactic neurosurgery, whether it was in the realm of movement disorders, as has been claimed repeatedly, or in the realm of psychiatry, a review of the original scholarly literature was conducted. Interleaving Stimulation in Parkinson ’s Disease, Tremor, and Dystonia
Conclusions: In PD, ILS provided benefits for dyskinesias and parkinsonism, with minimal improvement of other adverse effects. Before the advent of levodopa, pallidotomy was initially the most effective treatment for Parkinson disease, but it was soon superseded by thalamotomy.
