Patient-Reported Outcomes and Predictive Factors following Focused Ultrasound Thalamotomy for Essential Tremor
Conclusion: While subjective hand tremor improvement declines with time, willingness to undergo the procedure again following MRgFUS thalamotomy for ET remains very high even several years after the procedure.Stereotact Funct Neurosurg (Source: Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery)

Ablation Surgeries for Treatment-Resistant Depression: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review of Reported Case Series
Conclusion: As a standalone neurosurgical procedure, we found that BAC appears to be the most effective and safest of all the ablative targets for TRD. A major limitation of this conclusion is the paucity of published case series where sample sizes are small and all are open label.Stereotact Funct Neurosurg (Source: Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery)

Botulinum Toxin as an Effective Treatment for Trigeminal Neuralgia in Surgical Practices
Discussion: Indication is an important predictor for BTX-A, with classical TN patients exhibiting the highest response rates. This research highlights the viability of BTX-A as an important tool in the arsenal of providers seeking to treat TN in a minimally invasive manner.Stereotact Funct Neurosurg (Source: Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery)

Serendipity and Observations in Functional Neurosurgery: From James Parkinson ’s Stroke to Hamani’s & amp; Lozano ’s Flashbacks
Background: Serendipity and observations have a noble tradition in medicine, including neurology, and are responsible for many medical treatments (carbamazepine for tic douloureux, amantadine for Parkinson ’s disease, gabapentin for restless legs…). We aimed at examining the contribution of serendipity and observations to functional neurosurgery. Scholarly publications relevant to the history of functional neurosurgery for movement and psychiatric disorders were reviewed, starting from the pre-ste reotactic era. The documents were scrutinized with respect to indications for surgery, surgical methods, and brain targets,...

No Adverse Effects following Off-Label Magnetic Resonance Imaging in a Patient with Two Deep Brain Stimulation Systems: A Case Report
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with implanted deep brain stimulation (DBS) systems is subject to strict guidelines in order to ensure patient safety. Criteria include limits on the number of implanted leads. Here, we describe the case of a 29-year-old patient with generalized dystonia implanted with 4 DBS electrodes and 2 implantable pulse generators, who had an off-label spinal MRI without regard for manufacturer guidance yet suffered no adverse effects. This suggests that manufacturer guidelines might be overly restrictive with regards to limits on implanted DBS hardware. Further research in this area is ne...

Ipsilateral Effects of Unilateral Deep Brain Stimulation for Essential Tremor
Conclusions: There was no difference in severity of ipsilateral tremor, neither at 1 year nor in the long term. We believe ipsilateral effects of DBS for ET merits limited consideration regarding decision-making or patient counseling before surgery.Stereotact Funct Neurosurg (Source: Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery)

Cross-Sectional Analysis of US Health Insurance Payer Policies for Humanitarian Device Exemption Indications for Deep Brain Stimulation
Conclusions: In spite of similar levels of support from the FDA, DBS for OCD has less support from insurance companies on a national level. This study begins to quantify the disparity noted by functional neurosurgeons in recent literature.Stereotact Funct Neurosurg (Source: Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery)
