Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia: Is There a Link in Relatives?
We report 6 additional cases of female patients with familial FFA (F-FFA) from 3 different families. Sixty-six percent had a family history of autoimmune disease in first-degree relatives; these same patients had a personal history of autoimmune disease. The families described in this cohort study plus the personal and family history of autoimmune disease, as well as the recently described involved genomic loci; reinforced the hypothesis of this disease being genetic. It is important to consider studying this entity since there are scarce data regarding familial cases and this might give us a better insight toward understa...

A Review of Nail Changes in Acrokeratosis Paraneoplastica (Bazex Syndrome)
Acrokeratosis paraneoplastica (Bazex syndrome) is a rare paraneoplastic dermatosis associated with internal malignancies. Clinical presentation is characterized by erythematous or violaceous scaly plaques involving the digits, nose, ears, palms, and soles. Nail changes commonly present concurrently with cutaneous manifestations. In this review, we characterize nail changes associated with acrokeratosis paraneoplastica. A total of 48 cases were analyzed. Nail findings were nonspecific, with the most common being nail plate thickening, onycholysis, subungual hyperkeratosis, longitudinal ridging, discoloration, and nail plate...

The Effects of Smoking on Hair Health: A Systematic Review
Smoking is not only a preventable cause of significant systemic disease but also affects the follicular growth cycle and fiber pigmentation. Ambient tobacco smoke exposure results in nicotine accumulation in hair follicles and the hair shaft. This review summarizes the evidence on the association between smoking and hair health, as denoted by alopecia and premature hair graying (PHG). In July 2020, a review of the literature using PubMed/MEDLINE and CINAHL databases identified 32 studies investigating the relationship between smoking, PHG, and alopecia (androgenetic alopecia and frontal fibrosing alopecia). The prevalence ...

Bibliometric Analysis of the 50 Most Cited Publications in Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Conclusions: Recent advances in HS research have focused on investigating HS pathogenesis and drug development, highlighting disease comorbidities, and improving evidence-based care. Studies in pathogenesis have translated into a paradigm shift in medical treatment from antibiotics to incorporation of targeted therapies in recent years. Encouraging growth of HS research in countries outside of North America and Europe may help to optimize HS care globally.Skin Appendage Disord (Source: Skin Appendage Disorders)

Nonscarring Alopecia and Hypopigmented Lesions May Be Unusual Signs of Secondary Syphilis
We present a case of a 22-year-old patient in whom these symptoms were associated with positive spirochete reactions, which allowed making a diagnosis of syphilitic alopecia coexisting with leukoderma syphiliticum. Skin lesions and hair loss resolved after the treatment with benzathine benzylpenicillin. Trichoscopy in syphilitic alopecia is nonspecific, but the absence of features typical for alopecia areata such as exclamation mark hairs may be important on an early stage of the clinical workup.Skin Appendage Disord (Source: Skin Appendage Disorders)

Subclinical Onychomycosis in Apparently Healthy Adults
Conclusion: We found 4 patients with yeasts, 3 with hyphae, and 1 patient with a combined infection with both yeasts and hyphae (3.1%). These add up to 25% of the clinically apparent healthy nails. Our results show that we still have much to learn from the initial stages of onychomycosis and that our population probably has higher incidence of this nail disease, so we must be alert to subtle nail changes. As our participants signed an informed consent, we will contact those that resulted positive for follow up consultations.Skin Appendage Disord (Source: Skin Appendage Disorders)
