Pediatric Rheumatology Comes of Age: Part II
The twenty-first century has been a time of enormous growth for pediatric rheumatology worldwide, spurred by the growing availability of multiple effective treatments and recognition that collaborative research is necessary to study successfully even the most common of pediatric rheumatic diseases. In North America, the incorporation and maturation of the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA) coincide with critical progress in approaches to treatment, disease pathogenesis, and ever-expanding medication options. Pediatric Rheumatology Comes of Age: Part II
Dr Yukiko Kimura and Dr Laura E. Schanberg have assembled two issues that reflect the remarkable changes taking place in the pediatric rheumatology community over the past 10 years. Much of this success, as reflected in the issues, is due to the strides forward in collaborative research efforts made by the various organizational care and research structures of which Laura and Yuki have played such a pivotal role and continue to do so. It is not true, however, that there has only been successes, since our editors tell us that clinical remission for childhood arthritis is not achieved in a substantial number of cases. (Sourc...

Cardiovascular Health in Pediatric Rheumatologic Diseases
Cardiovascular disease risk is evident during childhood for patients with juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus, juvenile dermatomyositis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The American Heart Association defines cardiovascular health as a positive health construct reflecting the sum of protective factors against cardiovascular disease. Disease-related factors such as chronic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction increase cardiovascular disease risk directly and through bidirectional relationships with poor cardiovascular health factors. Pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions to improve cardiovascular health a...

Outcome Measures in Pediatric Rheumatic Disease
Reliable and responsive outcome measures that accurately detect changes in disease state, activity, and damage are crucial to conducting observational and interventional trials that can directly transform care for children with rheumatic disease. A combination of consensus-based and direct measurement approaches has led to the development of several validated, composite outcome measures in juvenile idiopathic arthritis, juvenile dermatomyositis, childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus, and pediatric vasculitis. This review outlines clinician-reported, disease-specific outcome measures developed for these conditions. (...
